Chargers Pull Away in Second Half to Defeat Suffolk, 63-51

BOSTON, Mass. - November 21, 2017 - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team won its third straight game to begin the season after Tuesday night's 63-51 victory at Suffolk.

The Chargers improve to 3-0 to tie the best start since 2011-12. Colby-Sawyer will play an exhibition game on November 29 at Division I University of New Hampshire. Suffolk evens its record to 2-2. The Rams were selected fifth out of 13 teams in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) preseason poll. Colby-Sawyer will become a member of the GNAC next season.

Colby-Sawyer sophomore Tianna Sugars (Oxford, Maine) continued her hot start with a game best 19 points to go along with eight rebounds. Sophomore Lexie Hamilton (Sunapee, N.H.) flirted with a triple-double to finish with 18 points, 10 rebounds and six assists. Senior Emmani Robinson (Newburgh, N.Y.) also reached double figures with 10 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Georgie Bourikas paced the Rams with 15 points. She added four boards and three steals. Jordan Hipwell also scored double figures with 13. Alexis Hackett pulled down a game best 14 rebounds.

Seven different Rams put the ball in the hoop over the course of the first 10 minutes to give Suffolk a 14-10 edge. Colby-Sawyer cut Suffolk's advantage to two as Lexie Hamilton put in a pair at the line. Jordan Hipwell responded for the Rams as the rookie converted a steal into two points and Georgie Bourikas followed with a triple to put a seven-point distance back between the Chargers, 19-12, with 7:30 remaining before the break. The second stanza turned into a back-and-forth with the Rams maintaining their advantage to head into halftime up 24-20.

A quick and-one by Tianna Sugars made it a one-point game in the opening seconds of the third quarter and a see-saw affair ensued with the three lead changes and a pair of ties. Behind three traditional three-point plays by Sugars, the Chargers grabbed a 41-35 cushion with 1:56 on the clock in the third.

The Rams received back-to-back threes from Mya Blazejowski and Marissa Gudauskas to level the score at 41-41 with just over one minute to go in the third. Hamilton ended the frame with a good jumper to keep the visitors in front, 43-41.

Colby-Sawyer put away the first 10 points of the fourth to make it a 53-41 contest. Jenni-Rose DiCecco converted an and-one of her own and Bourikas put away her second three-ball of the evening to cut the deficit to eight, but the Chargers rebuilt their double figure advantage, 57-47, at the 3:23 minute mark.

Colby-Sawyer stood tall in the final moments holding Suffolk, which brought an average of 66.7 points per game into the contest, to 51 points for a final score of 63-51 in favor of the Chargers.
