Women's Soccer Draws with UMass Boston, 1-1

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 11, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's soccer team played to a 1-1 draw with UMass Boston at Kelsey Field Wednesday afternoon.  

Colby-Sawyer goes to 9-2-1 on the season and will return to North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Saturday with a 12:30 p.m. home start against Green Mountain. UMass Boston goes to 3-8-2 and will resume Little East Conference (LEC) action on Saturday with a 2 p.m. home match against UMass Dartmouth.

The Chargers went in front 1-0 in the 20th minutes on a nifty play from a pair of junior teammates. Hannah Fields (Shapleigh, Maine) was running down the left side went she sent a cross into the box. Maddie Chamard (Portsmouth, R.I.) was there to receive the ball and rip a shot into the opposite corner of the goal. The tally for Chamard was her third of the season, while Fields picked up her team leading seventh assist.

UMass Boston found an equalizer in the 63rd minute in a similar fashion as Colby-Sawyer's goal. Sophomore Nikita Duminy (Durban, South Africa) was outside of the box on the left flank when she sent a bending ball into the goal area. Senior Kerri Alexander (Carver, Mass.) took a touch then fired a shot into the open right corner of the net by the diving Colby-Sawyer goalie.

Neither team could find the game-winner in either of the overtime sessions, but Colby-Sawyer had a 4-2 shot advantage with two on target.

Sophomore keeper Sam Mitchell (Chester, N.H.) made five saves for Colby-Sawyer. Beacons goalie Alyssa Fugiel (Easthampton, Mass.) played the first half and allowed one goal. She had four saves. Sophomore Gigi Braga (Medford, Mass.) played the remaining 65 minutes without allowing a goal and made five saves.

Colby-Sawyer held a 20-10 advantage in shots and a 7-4 edge in corner kicks.
