NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 20, 2017 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell to the visiting Terriers of Thomas College, 71-61, in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Friday evening.
Thomas evens its record to 8-8 overall and improves to 6-3 in the NAC. The Terriers will remain in New Hampshire to play at New England College tomorrow at 1 p.m. Colby-Sawyer drops to 7-9 overall and 4-5 in the conference. The Chargers will host UMaine-Farmington tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The conference's second leading scorer Tyheem Simon (Far Rockaway, N.Y.) of Thomas poured in 23 points and added nine rebounds. Junior Carlos Gonzalez (Kennebunk, Maine) registered a double-double of 13 points and 15 rebounds, to go along with four blocks. Freshman Zach Mackinnon (Kennebunk, Maine) added 15 points, while sophomore Willie Grant (Philadelphia, Pa.) was the fourth Terrier in double figures with 13 points.
Colby-Sawyer was led by junior
Taylor Grande's (Bedford, N.H.) 17 points. Freshman
Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) just missed a double-double with 13 points and nine rebounds. Sophomore
Milani Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) contributed 13 points, eight rebounds and four assists.
The first half was evenly played throughout with Thomas coming away with a 34-32 edge at the break. Colby-Sawyer had its largest lead of the first after a
Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) three-pointer to give the home team a 15-11 lead 7:32 into the frame. Four minutes later, Thomas took the lead on a dunk by Gonzalez and held the advantage for the remaining 9:49. Colby-Sawyer's
Patrick Coffey (Westford, Mass.) scored the final bucket of the half, but the Chargers trailed 34-32.
The Chargers took the lead on their first possession of the second half when
Dana Bean completed a three-point play. Willie Grant responded for Thomas on the next trip down the floor to give the Terriers a 36-35 lead.
Thomas slowly increased the advantage, which eventually ballooned to 17 after a Gonzalez layup with 7:47 (64-47) to play. Colby-Sawyer chipped away at the deficit and came within eight (67-59) after a Coffey layup. Sensing a momentum shift, the Terriers called a timeout. Thomas answered the run with four straight points out of the stoppage and went on for the 71-61 victory.
