NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 3, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team was edged by Daniel Webster, 4-3 in overtime on Saturday afternoon.
Daniel Webster, which has won the past two New England Collegiate Conference (NECC) titles, improves to 2-0 and will host Keene State on Wednesday. Colby-Sawyer evens its record to 1-1 and will play its first road match of the season on Wednesday at Eastern Nazarene.
The Eagles held a 3-2 lead in the waning moments of the second half before Colby-Sawyer found the equalizer off the head of sophomore
Noah Camelo (Marblehead, Mass.). Senior
Andrew Clothier (Matamata, New Zealand) sent a perfect cross into the box where Camelo finished. The assist gave Clothier 22 for his career, tying him with Dimitri Dimakis for most all-time.
Seconds after the match was knotted at 3-3, an unfortunate tackle by Colby-Sawyer resulted in an injured Daniel Webster player and a lengthy delay. When play resumed with 1:07 left on the clock and each team playing with 10 men, both sides showed sportsmanship and let the clock run out with no action to send the match into overtime.
Daniel Webster freshman Kevin Herrera (Metapan, El Salvador) was found by junior Alex Carvajal (Medelin, Colombia) streaking down the left flank. Herrera, who scored the game's first goal, scored the game-winner into the bottom right corner of the net at 97:27.
Herrera opened the scoring in the 28th minute when he finished a pass from junior Stephen Brown (Terryville, Conn.).
Junior
Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.) tied the match less than seven minutes later with a chip over the oncoming goalie.
The Eagles took a 2-1 lead into the break after senior Michael Ottman (Kennebunkport, Maine) headed home a corner kick from freshman Jimmy Brophy (Beverly, Mass.).
Seventeen minutes into the second frame, Colby-Sawyer was awarded a penalty kick after a foul call in the box. Sexton was able to convert to even the score at 2-2. On the same play, a Daniel Webster player was sent off with a red card, giving the Chargers a man advantage with close to 25 minutes left to play.
Playing a man down, Daniel Webster regained the lead when Alex Carvajal snuck in behind the defenders. After his initial shot was saved, the ball came back to him and he finished the second chance.
Camelo's goal tied the game for Colby-Sawyer with 1:30 to play. The match would be 10 v. 10 seconds later after a Colby-Sawyer player was sent off with a red card for the dangerous tackle resulting in the injured Eagle.
Junior goalie Cooper Hall (Heber City, Utah) got the win for Daniel Webster and made seven saves.
Sophomore
Shane Sacks (Huntington Station, N.Y.) played the first half for the Chargers and gave up a pair of goals. Sophomore
