NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 24, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team scored twice in a 26 second span early in the second half and held on for a 2-1 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Castleton on Saturday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 3-3-1 overall and 1-0-1 in the NAC. The Chargers will travel to Henniker, New Hampshire next Saturday for a NAC contest against New England College at noon. Castleton drops to 1-5-2 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Spartans will host NAC foe Lyndon on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
The first half was played primarily in the middle third of the field with very few opportunities for each side. Both teams took three shots in the frame and were held scoreless.
Six minutes into the second half, Colby-Sawyer broke the scoreless drought on junior
Denali Sexton's (Barrington, R.I.) team leading seventh goal of the season. He possessed the ball 40 yards from goal and was able to weave through multiple defenders and beat the oncoming keeper into the left side of the net.
The Chargers, playing with momentum, doubled their lead 26 seconds later. Junior
Eddie Garcia (Damascus, Md.) sent a cross to the left flank where junior
Jake Sykes (Laconia, N.H.) ripped a ball towards goal that went off Castleton goalie Aaron Parker's (Windsor, Vt.) hands and into the back of the net.
Castleton was able to get a goal back in the 76th minute after applying offensive pressure towards the box. Freshman Jack Kingdon (Woodbury, Conn.) took an initial shot that went off the far post where senior Nihad Basic (Burlington, Vt.) deposited the carom for his first goal of the season.
Colby-Sawyer keeper
Jake Towle (Barnstead, N.H.) made four saves in the win, while Parker stopped one shot for the Spartans.
