Women's Volleyball Falls at Amherst, 3-0

AMHERST, Mass. – September 21, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball fell to Amherst College, 3-0 (25-14, 25-10, 25-18) in Wednesday evening's non-conference contest at LeFrak Gymnasium.

Amherst improves to 5-2, while Colby-Sawyer moves to 3-10 on the season. Amherst returns to action Friday, September 23 when it hosts archrival and Little III foe Williams College in its NESCAC home opener. Colby-Sawyer continues its road trip with a tri-match on Saturday at Trinity with Wesleyan. 

Amherst jumped out to an early, 8-2 lead in the opening set following a kill by Lauren Reppert '19, but Colby-Sawyer answered back scoring eight of the next 10 points to even the frame at 10-10 following an ace from Olivia Goodrich. The Chargers took a 14-13 lead following an attacking error by the Purple & White, but Amherst rallied scoring 12 of the next 13 points to pull away to a 25-14 victory in the first stanza.

The early stages of the second set again saw Amherst muscle out to an 8-1 advantage before Colby-Sawyer chipped away at the lead. The Chargers closed to within four twice in the set, but with Amherst holding a 16-10 lead, the Purple & White finished the frame by scoring nine straight points.

A back-and-forth start to the third set saw Amherst use a 9-0 run to break a 5-5 deadlock that gave the Purple & White a 14-5 cushion. Amherst extended its advantage to 21-9 before the Chargers rebounded and eventually pulled to within 10 at 24-14. Four straight miscues by the Purple & White allowed Colby-Sawyer to narrow the deficit to 24-18, but Maggie Danner ended the match with her 16th kill of the contest to complete the sweep.

Danner led all players with 16 kills on .593 hitting. Kate Bres had 28 assists. Candace Chung led all players with 11 digs.

Allie Rogers led Colby-Sawyer with seven kills, while Goodrich paced the offense with 16 assists. Caroline McCoy notched eight digs, while Morgan Flynn added seven. Goodrich also tallied two service aces.
