NEW LONDON, N.H. - April 10, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team defeated Wheaton (MA) for the first time in program history on Sunday evening at Mountainside Racquet Club. The Chargers won 5-4.
The Chargers improve to 16-5 overall and snap a 12-match losing streak to the Lyons dating back to 1983. Colby-Sawyer will play at Saint Anselm on Monday at 4 p.m. Wheaton drops to 5-12 and will resume action with a home match against Holy Cross on Friday.
Colby-Sawyer swept doubles play taking an important 3-0 lead in to singles action.
Ashlyn Ramsay and
Ashley Woodside teamed to beat Izzy Gorham and Ines de Bracamonte, 8-3 at No. 1 doubles.
Aislinn O'Connor and
Evelyn Miller got their 18th doubles win as a team, which is tied for fourth most in a single season. The duo defeated Jodi Katz and Michelle Trainor, 8-4 at No. 2. Colby-Sawyer's No. 3 team of
Maddy Gemerek and
Lauren Blanchard made it a clean sweep with an 8-6 victory over Cat Amick and Caroline DiNicola-Fawley.
Woodside gave Colby-Sawyer four points with her 6-3, 6-2 win at the second flight over Gorham.
O'Connor closed the match for the Chargers with a hard fought 7-6 (4), 6-3 victory over Katz at No. 4 singles.
