Caitlyn Whearty Records 100th Career Goal in 15-5 Win over NEC

NEW LONDON, N.H. – March 30, 2016 – Colby-Sawyer senior Caitlyn Whearty (Hampstead, N.H.) recorded her 100th career goal as the women's lacrosse team defeated New England College, 15-5 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action on Wednesday afternoon.  

The Chargers improve to 3-4 overall and 2-0 in the NAC. Colby-Sawyer will host Maine Maritime on Saturday at 1 p.m. New England College drops to 3-5 overall and 1-1 in conference play. The Pilgrims travel to Thomas on Saturday for a 4:30 p.m. start.

Whearty opened the scoring of the second half with her first goal of the game and 99th of her career. Six minutes later and with 22:10 left to play, Whearty found the back of the goal with her team leading 19th tally of the season and 100th of her career.

Colby-Sawyer's Molly Mulcahy (Nashua, N.H.) had a game-high six points on four goals and two assists. Senior Sara Berry (Bowdoinham, Maine) and sophomore Bailey Starr (Barre, Vt.) added three goals apiece.

New England College was led by Tara Bainbridge (South Hadley, Mass.) who had three goals and five ground balls. Allison Granata (Norwalk, Conn.) and Caitlin Shanahan (Rocky Point, N.Y.) each had a goal.

Reigning NAC and ECAC Defensive Player of the Week junior Meghan Castellano (Wallingford, Conn.) made nine saves for the Chargers, including five on free positions to earn the win. Junior Mackenzie Meegan (Phoenix, Ariz.) had six stops for New England College.

The shots were even in the first half 14-14, but Colby-Sawyer was able to connect on eight of them to take an 8-4 lead into halftime. The Chargers turned up the offensive pressure in the second half, which led to a 7-1 advantage on the scoreboard in the frame and a 13-7 edge in shots.
