Men's Basketball Earns Second Seed in ECAC Tournament

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 29, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College men's basketball team has earned the second seed in the 2015-16 Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III New England Basketball Championship.  

Colby-Sawyer earned the second seed after posting a 19-7 record. The Chargers made an appearance in the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) title game for the second straight season, but fell at top seed Husson. Colby-Sawyer will make their first trip to the ECAC Tournament since the 2008-09 season and ninth trip overall. The Chargers won the 1997-98 ECAC Championship.  

Anna Maria has a 14-12 record and will enter the ECAC Tournament after a tough 91-89 loss to Emmanuel in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) quarterfinals. The AMCATS will be making their fifth trip in the past six seasons.

SCOUTING COLBY-SAWYER

The Chargers are led by senior duo Peter Donato (Portland, Maine) and Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.). Donato, who is the back-to-back NAC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team honoree, leads the team with 22.3 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. The senior is shooting an impressive 53.7 percent from the floor and was named to the NAC All-Tournament team after scoring 65 points in two games. Majong, who was named to the NAC Second Team, is averaging 17.2 points per game and leads the team with 57 steals.  

SCOUTING ANNA MARIA

The AMCATS are led by senior Patrick Bradanese (Billerica, Mass.) who tallies 19.9 points and 5.7 assists per game. Bradanese earned All-GNAC First Team accolades. Senior guard Tyler Delorey (Worcester, Mass.), who was named to the All-GNAC Third Team, is second on the team with 14.3 points per game and shoots 39.1 percent from beyond the arc.

THE MATCHUP

Colby-Sawyer and Anna Maria are familiar foes having played each other from 1995-96 to 2010-11 as members of the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC). The Chargers hold a 19-4 record over the AMCATS and have won the last three meetings, but have not played each other since 2011. The two teams last met in the ECAC Tournament in 1994-95 with Colby-Sawyer winning 103-63. The last time the teams met in the postseason was in the 2001-02 CCC quarterfinals, a game the Chargers won 86-54.  

ECAC TOURNAMENT

This year's tournament features a field of five teams. In the first round of games, No. 5 seed Pine Manor College (11-9) will host No. 4 seed Elms College (14-12) on Wednesday, March 2. The winner of that game will advance to play top seeded Nichols College (23-4) on Saturday, March 5 at Colby-Sawyer. Anna Maria and Colby-Sawyer will play the other semifinal game on Saturday.
