NORTHFIELD, Vt. - November 15, 2016 - The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team fell at Norwich, 81-74, in a 2016-17 season opener on Tuesday night.
The Chargers will travel to Westfield State this weekend for a pair of games at the Rick Martin/Holiday Inn Express Tournament.
Sophomore
Jourdain Bell (Manchester, N.H.) led all players with a career-high 23 points. Sophomore
Milani Hicks (Scarborough, Maine) also poured in a career best 20 points, while junior
Taylor Grande (Bedford, N.H.) added 18 points and seven assists. Freshman
Dana Bean (Franklin, N.H.) collected nine points and 10 boards in his debut. Junior
Matt Maynard (Shelburne, Vt.) grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.
Junior Ryan Booth (Northfield, Vt.) hit four three-point baskets for the Cadets, scoring 18 points while hauling in six rebounds. Sophomore Daniel Haimes (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.) checked in with a career-high 17 points, tallying five assists and a team-leading three steals. Junior Zygimantas Sirvydas (Silale, Lithuania) and junior Joe Bertrand (Saugus, Mass.) rounded out the double-digit point scorers, notching 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Chargers held a 29-21 lead with 7:05 left in the opening half, but the Cadets scored five straight points on a pair of free throws and a three-pointer to cut the deficit to three points with 6:20 to go. A Bell layup increased the Chargers lead back to five, but another trey by Norwich closed the gap to 31-29.
After a three-pointer and four straight free throws put Norwich in front 36-31, the Chargers used a 6-0 run capped by another Bell lay-in to take a 37-36 lead. The Cadets then scored the final 10 points of the half to take a 46-37 lead into the break.
The Cadets shot 52.6 percent from beyond the arc in the first half, making 10 three-pointers.
Colby-Sawyer held Norwich to 1-12 from deep in the second half, but Norwich went 16-18 from the free throw line to hang for the 81-74 victory.
