NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 9, 2016 – After trailing 2-0, the Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team scored five unanswered goals to come away with a 5-2 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Lyndon on a cool and rainy Sunday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 6-4-1 overall and 3-1-1 in conference action. The Chargers travel to Green Mountain on Wednesday. Lyndon drops to 5-6 overall and 2-5 in the NAC. The Hornets travel to UMaine-Farmington on Saturday.
The Hornets put the first goal on the board in the 7th minute when goalkeeper Matt LaClair (Beekmantown, N.Y.) sent a towering ball past midfield that took two big bounces over the Colby-Sawyer defenders. Junior Hunter Torrey (Newbury, Vt.) connected his head to the ball as it was coming down the second time to finish past the oncoming Charger keeper.
Lyndon doubled its advantage in the 39th minute off another header. Torrey sent a cross into the box where junior Joshua Thibault (Glover, Vt.) finished for his first goal of the season.
Colby-Sawyer was able to get a goal back in the waning moments of the first half when junior
Denali Sexton (Barrington, R.I.) scored with 20 seconds to play off a feed from sophomore
Anthony Romeo (Albany, N.Y.).
The Chargers carried the momentum into the second half where they scored four goals on their first four shots of the frame.
Senior
Andrew Clothier (Matamata, New Zealand) scored his fourth goal of the season at 47:01 on an assist from Sexton.
Junior
Eddie Garcia (Damascus, Md.) then put the Chargers on top two minutes later when he finished a
Jake Sykes (Laconia, N.H.) cross.
Sexton secured the victory by adding the game's final two goals (51:10, 53:31) on a penalty kick and another assist from Romeo to complete the hat-trick.
Sophomore
Jake Towle (Barnstead, N.H.) had three saves for Colby-Sawyer. LaClair finished with nine saves in 73:50 of action, while Caleb Derbyshire (Barton, Vt.) finished the match and made two stops.
