NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 8, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team dropped a pair of matches at Saturday's home tri-match with UMass Boston and Coast Guard.
UMass Boston, which is ranked fourth in the most recent New England Women's Volleyball Association (NEWVA) poll, earned a pair of 3-0 wins over Colby-Sawyer and Coast Guard to improve to 16-3. The Beacons will host Roger Williams on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
Coast Guard goes to 10-9 after a 3-0 loss to UMass Boston and a 3-0 win over Colby-Sawyer. The Bears will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Tuesday with a 7 p.m. contest at home against Wheaton.
Colby-Sawyer falls to 5-17 and will begin a stretch of five road matches on Wednesday against undefeated Johnson & Wales.
UMass Boston 3, Colby-Sawyer 0 – 25-13, 27-25, 25-19
UMass Boston senior Julia Murphy (Canton, Mass.) had a match best 12 kills on .455 hitting to lead the Beacons to the 3-0 win. Senior Colleen Koen (Centerville, Mass.) and sophomore Eileen Shi (San Francisco, Calif.) had nine kills apiece. Shi also collected a match high 11 digs.
Colby-Sawyer was led by sophomore
Courtney Murray's (Quincy, Mass.) six kills. Freshman
Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) added five kills. Freshmen
Morgan Flynn (Reading, Mass.) and
Ashley Kinley (Wilson, Wyo.) added six digs apiece.
UMass Boston 3, Coast Guard 0 – 25-18, 25-20, 25-17
The Beacons earned its tri-match sweep with a 3-0 victory over Coast Guard. Eileen Shi had 12 kills to lead UMass Boston, while Julia Murphy hit an impressive .692 to finish with nine kills and no errors. She added five total blocks. Koen added seven kills.
Coast Guard was led by 12 kills from freshman Angelou Dunton (Seattle, Wash.). She added seven digs and a pair of aces. Junior Emma Saunders (LaGrange, Ill.) hit .357 and finished with seven kills.
Coast Guard 3, Colby-Sawyer 0 – 25-23, 25-14, 25-19
Coast Guard senior Susan West (Jacksonville Beach, Fla.) led all players with 12 kills on .320 hitting. She added eight digs. Angelou Dunton collected six kills, six digs and three aces. Freshman Makenna Martin (Granbury, Texas) added 32 assists and seven digs. Emma Saunders finished with a match best five blocks to go along with six kills.
Murray once again led Colby-Sawyer with seven kills. Freshman
Monika Scheindel (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) had a team best 11 digs, while freshman
Jaia Woodland (Charlottesville, Va.) contributed four kills.
