Volleyball Seniors Shine in Two NAC Wins

NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 22, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's volleyball team won a pair of North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matches on Saturday as the team celebrated senior day.  

The Chargers defeated UMPI and Husson 3-0 to improve to 10-19 overall and finish in second place in the NAC standings with a 6-1 record.

Maine Maritime also won a pair of 3-0 matches today over UMPI and Husson to lock up the top seed in the upcoming NAC tournament with a perfect 7-0 record. The Mariners improved to 18-7 overall.

Husson dropped to 14-13 overall and 5-2 in the NAC to secure third place in the standings. UMPI dipped to 5-26 overall and 2-5 in the NAC and is in the sixth slot.

Tournament seedings and pairings will be announced later today by the conference office.

Colby-Sawyer 3, UMPI 0 – 25-18, 25-22, 25-11

Colby-Sawyer hit .237 as a team and collected 41 kills. The team was led by senior Gabrielle Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif.) who had a match-high 14 kills on .480 hitting. Freshman Jaia Woodland (Charlottesville, Va.) and junior Alli Lahiff (Haverhill, Mass.) added seven kills apiece. Senior Elyssa Clairmont (Sanbornton, N.H.) tallied 26 assists. Freshman Naarah Cox (Boston, Mass.) contributed six kills on .300 hitting.

The Owls received 11 kills from senior Abby Jewett (Bass Harbor, Maine). She also had 10 digs for the double-double and three blocks. Freshman Esmerelda Galvan (Bullhead City, Ariz.) chipped in 10 digs, while freshman Laura Aroz (Tucson, Ariz.) had 10 assists.  

Maine Maritime 3, UMPI 0 – 25-11, 25-14, 25-21

Maine Maritime was led by a match-high 14 kills and 14 digs from senior Gillian O'Neal (Burbank, Calif.). Sophomore Tess Clark (Spring, Texas) hit .318 and finished with 11 kills. Freshman Sydney Adams (Trumbull, Conn.) had 35 assists and an impressive eight service aces.

Abby Jewett led the Owls once again with five kills. Laura Aroz chipped in six assists and four digs. Sophomore Hannah Williams (Park Falls, N.S.) had a team best eight digs.

Maine Maritime 3, Husson – 25-11, 25-10, 25-19

O'Neal led the Mariners in kills with 12 on .346 hitting. Freshman middle Alexa Cacacie (Manahawkin, N.J.) also reached double figures with 11 kills and had no errors to hit an impressive .733. Sydney Adams finished with 37 assists and a pair of aces.

Husson received four kills from sophomore Kaitlyn Woods (Charlton, Mass.). Freshman Hanna Hembrow (Milford, N.H.) chipped in 10 assists and four digs.

Colby-Sawyer 3, Husson 0 – 25-19, 25-16, 25-12

The Chargers won their second match of the day behind 13 kills from Gabrielle Rodriguez. Fellow senior Elyssa Clairmont registered a double-double with match-highs of 28 assists and 15 digs. Woodland added seven kills for the second straight match, while freshman Ashley Kinley (Wilson, Wyo.) had eight digs and a match best four aces.

The Eagles were led by freshman Riley Mooers (Mount Desert, Maine) and junior Bailey Cote (Biddeford, Maine) who had five kills apiece. Kaitlyn Woods contributed a team best 12 digs, while Hanna Hembrow added 18 assists.
