NEW LONDON, N.H. – October 18, 2016 – The Colby-Sawyer men's soccer team fell to 15th ranked Middlebury, 3-1 on a foggy Tuesday afternoon at Kelsey Field.
The Panthers improve to 9-1-3 and will host Bates on Saturday. Colby-Sawyer drops to 8-5-1 and will resume North Atlantic Conference (NAC) action this weekend in Maine.
Middlebury opened the scoring 5:13 into the match when freshman Drew Goulart (Weston, Mass.) dribbled near the end line and scored from a tough angle past the diving keeper. The play was set up by sophomore Daniel O'Grady (New York, N.Y.) who put the corner kick in play to Goulart.
After 25 minutes of scoreless action, Colby-Sawyer found the equalizer at 30:40. Senior
Andrew Clothier (Matamata, New Zealand) enter the left side of the box and ripped a shot that ricocheted off the near post to an oncoming
Jake Sykes (Laconia, N.H.). Sykes knotted the game as he deposited the rebound past the keeper. The goal was just the seventh allowed by the Panthers all season.
The visitors regained the lead nine minutes later off a nifty goal from O'Grady. Freshman Shams Mohajerani (Brookline, Mass.) found O'Grady with a back pass in the six-yard box where he finished the one-timer for his fifth tally of the season.
The Panthers added an insurance goal in the 67th minute. Junior Jed Sass (White River Junction, Vt.) had his initial shot saved by Colby-Sawyer keeper
Jake Towle (Barnstead, N.H.), but it went right to Goulart who found the back of the net for his second goal of the contest.
Panthers keeper Greg Sydor (Madison, Conn.) had one stop in the win, while Towle finished the match with 10 saves for Colby-Sawyer.
