NEW LONDON, N.H. – September 6, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer College women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season to Merrimack College of Division II, 8-1 on a sunny Sunday afternoon.
Merrimack improves to 2-0 and will resume Northeast-10 Conference action at home on Wednesday against Franklin Pierce. Colby-Sawyer drops to 2-1 and will host Plymouth State on Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
The Warriors took a 2-1 advantage after doubles play and went on to sweep singles play for the 8-1 win.
The No. 2 doubles duo of
Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) and
Evelyn Miller (Smithfield, R.I.) remained perfect on the season by defeating Mackenzie Blair and Lauren Persson 9-8 (7-5) to register the Chargers' lone point of the match.
Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and
Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) fell to Grace Messina and Chealsey Giatrelis at the top flight, 8-3.
Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) and
Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) were defeated by Celine Mende and Mana Seifaei at No. 3 doubles, 8-4.
Woodside provided the best match at No. 2 singles pushing Chealsey Giatrelis to three sets. After dropping the first set 6-1, Woodside evened the match with a strong showing in the second for a 6-2 win. Each player fought exhaustion and heat in the third set as the match neared the 2:30 mark, but Giatrelis came away with a 6-4 win to take the match.
