WENHAM, Mass.— September 1, 2015 - The Colby-Sawyer women's tennis team earned a 6-3 road win at Gordon to begin the 2015-16 campaign.
Four singles matches went into third sets and the Chargers were able to claim three of those matches to secure an early season win.
Gordon took an early lead with Abbie Denney (Peoria, Ariz.) and Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) knocking off the Chargers' top duo 8-0. Colby-Sawyer was able to claim a victory right back, as
Aislinn O'Connor (New Fairfield, Conn.) and
Evelyn Miller (Smithfield, R.I.) rallied at the second flight for an 8-4 win. A seesaw match a third doubles nearly went to a tiebreaker, but
Maddy Gemerek (Ballston Spa, N.Y.) and
Lauren Blanchard (Agawam, Mass.) were able to hold off Gordon's threes 9-7.
First-year Justine Hanson (Meadow Vista, Calif.) evened the match score at two to kick off singles play. She handed
Ashley Woodside (Hampden, Maine) a straight-set 6-3, 6-3 loss at the second flight. Gemerek responded with a straight-set win over Abby Caron (Bedford, N.H.) to set up the drama down the stretch.
Senior Lily Drescher (Reading, Mass.) rebounded from a first-set loss to force a third frame against Blanchard. The Chargers' sophomore was able to find her groove in the final set to bring Colby-Sawyer within a point of match victory.
Gordon needed all three marathon matches remaining in the court to pull off the come from behind win, but only senior captain Yeaw would record a triumph. Playing third singles for the first time in her career, Yeaw shook off a tough first set to beat freshman O'Conner in a third-set tiebreak.
Ashlyn Ramsay (Barkhamsted, Conn.) and Miller clinched the match for the Chargers despite losing first sets.
Gordon will have a short turnaround as they travel to Norton, Mass. to take on Wheaton for the first time in program history. Colby-Sawyer also goes on the road on Wednesday to take on NCAA qualifier Farmingdale State.
