WATERVILLE, Maine - April 18, 2015 – The Thomas baseball team grabbed a doubleheader sweep over the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers this afternoon, taking game one 5-4 and game two 5-1.
GAME ONE - Thomas 5, Colby-Sawyer 4The Terriers rallied to tie and then walk-off with the 5-4 win over Chargers in the bottom of the seventh, as Michael De Los Santos hit a game-winning double down the right field line to secure victory in game one.
Thomas (10-14, 8-6 NAC) got off to a fast start in the first inning, as starting pitcher Isiah Fleming put Colby-Sawyer (0-22, 0-12 NAC) in order. Joe Quinlan and Derek Kane both reached base in the bottom of the inning on one-out singles.
Nik Beeson drove in Quinlan on a single through the right side to get Thomas the lead. Beau Ewton then hit into a fielder's choice, but Kane came in to score from third as the Terriers got off to a 2-0 lead.
Thomas threatened to score more in the second inning as they loaded the bases with two outs, but stranded the runners after Kane grounded out to pitcher
Mike Bowse.
The Chargers struck for the lead in the top of the fourth, plating three runs in the inning, highlighted by a
Justin Devoid RBI double.
In the fifth inning, both teams scored one run. Colby-Sawyer plated its run when
Brendan Thurber laid down a sacrifice bunt attempt and a throwing error by Ewton led to
Nathan Frongillo coming around to score. The Terriers got the run back after Matt Romandetti dropped a singled in to centerfield that scored Beeson.
Down 4-3 in the bottom of the seventh, Kane led the inning off with a walk and then advanced to second after a sacrifice by Beeson. Ewton lined out to second to put Thomas down to their final out. But Romandetti would come through with a game-tying RBI single past the left side, setting up De Los Santos to drop in a hit deep down the right field line to score Romandetti all the way from first for the walk-off win.
De Los Santos had three hit in the game and Romandetti had two hits and two runs batted in. Dominic Esposito took the win on the mound, going 2.2 innings in relief of Fleming.
Frongillo finished 3-for-4 to lead the Charger hitters.
GAME TWO - Thomas 5, Colby-Sawyer 1 Derek Kane threw a complete game three-hitter as Thomas took game two 5-1.
Thomas fell behind in the top of the first, as Colby-Sawyer plated a run on an RBI single up the middle by
Justin Devoid. The Terriers responded quickly with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Anree Benitez led off with a single to right center, followed with a walk by Joe Quinlan.
After Kane reached on a bunt-single to load the bases up, Nik Beeson singled home Benitez to tie the game up. Matt Romandetti would then ground out to third but hit home Quinlan to put Thomas in front 2-1.
Both teams went scoreless for the next three innings. Thomas would add to the lead in the fifth, as Beeson and Romandetti each drove home runs, and Quinlan scored on a wild pitch. Kane shut the door on the mound, closing out the Chargers for the 5-1 win.
Beeson and Romandetti each drove home two runs while Benitez and Quinlan scored two apiece.
Thomas and Colby-Sawyer will return to the field tomorrow for their second doubleheader of the weekend, starting at 12:00 PM.
