Baseball Drops a Pair of One-Run Games to Utica

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – March 19, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team dropped a pair of one-run games to Utica College at the Chain O'Lakes Baseball Complex on Thursday afternoon. Utica won by scores of 10-9 and 4-3.  

Colby-Sawyer falls to 0-8 and will look to end the trip on a positive note with a doubleheader against MCLA tomorrow beginning at 10:00 a.m. Utica improves to 6-1 and will play the College of Mount Saint Vincent tomorrow and Lake Myrtle at 10:00 a.m.

GAME 1 – UTICA 10, COLBY-SAWYER 9

The Chargers raced out to a 5-0 lead after the first inning thanks to a two-run triple from Connor Henry and RBI singles from Rob Wallace and Chris Hood, but Utica scored twice in the second and seven in the third on six singles to take a 9-5 lead.

Colby-Sawyer cut the deficit in half in the bottom half of the third with RBI's from Connor Henry and Chris Hood.

The Pioneers added a run in the fourth before Colby-Sawyer scored twice more in the bottom of the fifth on another RBI hit from Henry and a run scoring fielder's choice from Drew Inglesi.

Connor Henry had his best game of his early collegiate career going 3-for-4 with four RBI and three runs scored. Chris Hood also had a great game with three hits and a pair of RBI. Senior Brett Emmertz continued his hot hitting with a 4-for-4 performance.

Daniel Priore led Utica with three hits and three RBI. Adam Pexton knocked in a pair on two hits.

Mike Peters was saddled with the loss for the Chargers, but gave up just two earned runs. Joe DiTullio-Dotto tossed two innings of one-hit ball late in relief.

Stephen Szatko earned his second win of the season with 2.2 innings of relief. He struck out two and allowed one hit.  

 
GAME 2 – UTICA 4, Colby-Sawyer 3

After two and a half scoreless innings to open game two, the Pioneers benefited from an errant throw on a pick-off attempt and plated a pair.

Colby-Sawyer was able to knot the game with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth on a RBI single from freshman Matt McIntosh and a run scoring fielder's choice by Drew Inglesi.

Andrew Hobika Jr. broke the tie in the bottom of the sixth on a wild pitch. Utica added one more in the inning on a sacrifice fly from Christopher Wotten.

The Chargers were able to scrape a run in their last at-bat, but Utica hurler Vincent Burillo induced a groundout to end the game in favor of the Pioneers, 4-3.

Jackson Musco was one of two Chargers to get a pair of hits. He stole a base and scored two of the teams three runs. Connor Henry went 2-for-3.

Utica received seven hits from seven different players.

Burillo was credited with the win for the Pioneers as he threw the final two innings of the game and gave up two hits.

Colby-Sawyer's Chris Mitchell Jr. threw 5.1 innings and surrendered two earned runs and struck out four.
