Baseball Drops Doubleheader to Wentworth to Begin 2015

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – March 14, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team opened the 2015 season with a doubleheader with former Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Wentworth. The Leopards took both ends of the twin bill by scores of 7-2 and 10-1.

The Chargers drop to 0-2 and will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12:30 p.m. against North Atlantic Conference (NAC) opponent UMaine-Farmington. Wentworth ends its trip at 7-3.

GAME 1 – WENTWORTH 7, COLBY-SAWYER 2

The Chargers, who were the away team in the first game, scored twice in the top of the first. Freshman Drew Inglesi led off the game with a walk and scored later in the inning on a throwing error by the catcher. Senior Rob Wallace brought in sophomore Nathan Frongillo with a RBI single to left.

Wentworth got a run back in its first at-bat when Christian Ferri scored on a wild pitch.

Colby-Sawyer threatened in the top of the fourth by loading the bases, but Zack Bernier induced a fly out to get out of the jam.5223

The Leopards evened the game in the bottom of the fourth on a double steal attempt. The Chargers snuffed the play out and caught Scott Ouellette off of third base, but he was able to cross home plate when the ball rolled away after hitting him during the rundown.

Wentworth erupted for five runs in the bottom of the fifth to take a 7-2 lead.  Freshman Tyler Weninger had the big hit with his second homerun of the season, which scored Jordan Burst. Earlier, Burst drove in Ferri with a RBI double to right.

Bernier evens his record to 1-1 tossing six innings with no earned runs and eight strikeouts in the victory. Mike Peters took the loss for the Chargers going 4.2 innings with five earned runs and four strikeouts.

All four Colby-Sawyer freshmen (Drew Inglesi, Joey Fenuccio, Brendan Thurber, and Tim Donovan) playing in their first collegiate game recorded base hits.

Colby-Sawyer freshman pitcher Andrew Carbone gave up one hit in an inning in his first appearance on the mound.

GAME 2 – WENTWORTH 10, COLBY-SAWYER 1

In similar fashion to game one, the away team, this time Wentworth, scored a pair of runs in the top of the first. After the first three batters reached, Jordan Burst knocked in the game's first run on a fielder's choice. The second run crossed the plate on an errant throw as the Leopards attempted a steal in a first and third situation.

Wentworth doubled its lead in the third on a RBI double to the left field gap from Scott Ouellette. Ouellette later scored on an error.

The Leopards added two more in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Christian Ferri opened the frame with a single and later scored his second run of the game on a wild pitch. Four batters later, Tyler Weninger contributed a run scoring single to right.

After recording his first collegiate hit in the second inning, Colby-Sawyer freshman Connor Henry got his second in the fourth, which brought around Nathan Frongillo for the Chargers' first run. Wentworth was able to escape any further damage thanks to a 5-4-3 double play to end the inning.

Wentworth pushed its advantage to 8-1 in the sixth when Jake Mailman delivered a two-run blast over the right field fence.

The Leopards tacked on a pair in the seventh on a RBI double from Joe Hulme and a sacrifice fly from Mailman.

Freshman Robby Sheldon won his second start of the trip for the Leopards. He went six innings with six strikeouts and gave up one run.

Chris Mitchell Jr. was saddled with the loss after 3.2 innings. He surrendered six runs (four earned) and struck out four.
