NEW LONDON, N.H. – November 1, 2015 – The University of Maine-Farmington men's soccer team entered the North Atlantic Conference (NAC) Tournament as the sixth seed and pulled a 2-1 double overtime upset victory over third seed Colby-Sawyer College in the quarterfinals on Sunday afternoon.
The Beavers improve to 6-9-3 and advance to the NAC semifinals and will play at second seed Castleton on Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers drop to 11-7 and will see if they make it to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Tournament in two weeks.
UMF sophomore Yusuf Yama (Goma, Congo) notched his third game-winning goal of the season when he scored off the right post 4:43 into the second overtime after a failed clear attempt by the Chargers' backline.
Despite the home team holding a 10-3 edge in shots in the first half the game entered the break in a scoreless tie.
The Beavers finally broke through in the 59th minute when senior Uriah Forest-Bulley (Turner Falls, Mass.) headed home his third goal of the season. The play was set up by a corner kick from senior Zach Sathasivam (Valley Stream, N.Y.) who sent the ball towards the box. Fellow senior Ryan Fairbanks (Lisbon Falls, Maine) then headed the ball to Forest-Bulley who finished for the first goal of the contest.
Colby-Sawyer found the equalizer 12 minutes later on a goal from sophomore
Eddie Garcia (Damascus, Md.). Freshman
Kevin Tracy (West Hartford, Conn.) sent a high arching ball to Garcia who controlled the ball off his chest and volleyed it into the left side of the net.
Yama ended the match with his sixth tally of the season at 104:43 to advance the Beavers to the semifinals.
UMF sophomore keeper Matt Wilson (Hamden, Conn.) had 10 saves in the victory. Freshman
Shane Sacks (Huntington Station, N.Y.) was saddled with the loss and made two saves.
Colby-Sawyer finished the match with a 21-9 advantage in shots and a 9-2 edge in corner kicks.
