NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 30, 2015 – The Thomas College men's basketball team overcame a nine-point halftime deficit to defeat Colby-Sawyer, 74-63 in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play on Friday evening.
Thomas improves to 9-9 overall and 7-4 in the NAC. The Terriers will play at New England College tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer drops to 11-5 overall and 9-2 in the conference. The Chargers host UMaine-Farmington at 1:00 p.m. tomorrow.
The Chargers led 35-26 at the half and were in front by 16 after a
Jake Maynard (Shelburne, Vt.) three halfway through the frame. The Terriers stayed close with a presence in the paint and finished the half with a pair of layups to trail by nine at the break. Thomas scored 20 of 26 points down low.
Thomas turned the game around in the second half holding the Charger offense to 22.9 percent shooting. The Terriers opened the stanza on a 13-5 run capped by a trey from the NAC's leading scorer junior Levi Barnes (Skowhegan, Maine). The game remained within five points for the next 10 minutes before Thomas used a 13-2 run to take its biggest lead of 14 with 1:07 on the clock. The Chargers scored four of the game's last five points, but it was not enough as the visitors held on for the 74-63 win.
Barnes led all scorers with 22 points in 25 minutes of action. Senior Eric Westbrooks (Dublin, Ireland) recorded a double-double of 16 points and a team best 10 boards. Senior Mike Akanji (Lincoln, R.I.) was the third Terrier in double figures with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Colby-Sawyer was led by junior
Peter Donato's (Portland, Maine) second straight double-double. He had team highs of 15 points and 15 rebounds. Senior
Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) scored 14 points and pulled down eight boards, while junior
Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) added 12 points and five assists.
The Terriers were outrebounded 47-38, but held a 16-4 edge in fast break points.
