Decisive Rebounding Edge Lifts Chargers Past NEC, 91-75

NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 24, 2015 – The Colby-Sawyer men's basketball team outrebounded New England College 46-28 and scored 25 second chance points in Saturday's 91-75 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over the Pilgrims.   

Colby-Sawyer improves to 11-4 overall and 9-1 in the conference. The Chargers will step out of conference for a 5:00 p.m. contest at Norwich on Tuesday. New England College falls to 7-10 overall and 4-6 in the conference. The Pilgrims will host UMaine-Farmington on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Junior Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) led the Chargers with 23 points. He was 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Junior Peter Donato (Portland, Maine) recorded his first double-double of the season with 14 points and a game-high 11 rebounds. Senior Kong Thok (Portland, Maine) also reached double figures with 12 points off the bench. Senior Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.) finished with seven points and moved into 10th on the all-time scoring list with 1302 career points.

Senior Robin Wilson (Biddeford, Maine) led NEC with a double-double of 23 points and 10 rebounds. Senior Jonathan Byrnes (Bethel, Conn.) added 16 points, while junior Dezron Wilson (Hartford, Conn.) went 6-for-10 for 15 points off the bench. Senior Ryan Schmitz (Redding, Calif.) contributed 11 points.

The teams traded baskets for the first few minutes and NEC went in front 14-10 after a trey by Byrnes with 13:04 left in the first half. Colby-Sawyer responded with a 9-0 run capped by a layup from freshman Taylor Grande (Bedford, N.H.) to take a 19-14 lead three minutes later. The Chargers then slowly increased the lead, which eventually got to 26 after a Thok three-pointer with 28 second left. NEC's Dezron Wilson hit a jumper with seven seconds to go, but Colby-Sawyer took a 49-25 lead into the break. The Chargers scored 15 second chance points thanks to 13 offensive rebounds in the frame.

Robin Wilson hit a three two minutes into the second to cut the Pilgrims deficit to 17 at 51-34. Colby-Sawyer responded with a Majong trey to go back in front by 20. The Chargers held at least a 20-point cushion until another Robin Wilson brought the game back to 17 with 4:20 to play. The Pilgrims continued a late run and came within 12 points after a jumper by Ryan Schmitz at 1:27. Majong hit four straight free throws with less than 30 second to play to ice the game and give Colby-Sawyer the 91-75 victory.

Colby-Sawyer went 18-24 from the free throw line, while the Pilgrims made 8-of-13 attempts. After shooting 34.6 percent in the first, NEC was 55.6 percent from the floor in the second.
