NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 17, 2015 – Colby-Sawyer junior
Peter Donato (Portland, Maine) scored 27 points on 10-15 shooting to lift the Chargers to a 78-51 North Atlantic Conference (NAC) victory over Maine Maritime on Saturday afternoon.
Colby-Sawyer improves to 9-4 overall and 7-1 in the conference. The Chargers will travel to Green Mountain on Tuesday for a 5:30 p.m. tip. Maine Maritime drops to 1-13 overall and 0-8 in the NAC.
Donato was 8-11 in the first half with 20 points. He scored the other seven points in seven minutes of action in the second half. He finished 7-8 from the free throw line, had three steals and was the only player in the game to score double figures. Freshman
Cam Meservey (Bedford, N.H.) had nine points and five rebounds off the bench, while junior
Kohl Meyers (Wolfeboro, N.H.) added five points and three boards.
Maine Maritime was led by nine points from freshman Tyler Thayer (Hermon, Maine). Sophomore Tyler Gilson (Thomaston, Maine) added eight points and seven rebounds in 19 minutes off the bench.
The Chargers used a strong offensive first half to create separation from the Mariners. Colby-Sawyer shot 47.1 percent from the floor, despite 1-7 from beyond the arc. The home team had a 24-10 advantage in the paint, which led to a 42-17 lead at the break.
Colby-Sawyer's two-point shooting cooled off in the second as the teams played more evenly. Each team got to the free throw line 22 times in the second with Colby-Sawyer making 16 and Maine Maritime knocking down 15.
The Chargers also used their defense to turn into easy offense. Colby-Sawyer forced 22 Mariner miscues and scored 32 points off the turnovers.
