Women’s Basketball Celebrates Senior Day

Box Score NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 15, 2014 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team celebrated senior day with a 72-50 win over New England College in North Atlantic Conference (NAC) play Saturday afternoon.

With the win the Chargers improve to 14-9 overall and 13-3 in NAC play while the Pilgrims fall to 12-11 overall and 8-8 in the NAC.

Prior to the start of today's game, seniors Ashley Fruzzetti and Mari Meserve were recognized for their four years of play for the Chargers. The duo from Carver, Massachusetts helped the Chargers win 73 games, which includes 55 conference wins in four years. The Chargers have reached the post season in all four of their years and were crowned conference champions last season.

The Chargers were led by junior Kelsey Cahill who tallied 19 points, six rebounds, five blocks and four assists. The reigning NAC Player of the Week shot 7 for 13 from the field and was 5 of 9 at the free throw line. Cahill moved into 10th place for career blocks with 85. Junior Kelsey Bragdon also reached double digits as she scored 11 and added seven rebounds.

Fruzzetti and Meserve each played key roles in the Chargers' win. Fruzzetti tallied nine points, five rebounds and a steal, while Meserve scored six points, grabbed six rebounds, and added three assists and a block.

The Pilgrims were led by senior Kayla Lawlor (Cocoa Beach, Fla.). Lawlor scored a game-high 26 points, scoring her 1,000th career point in the loss.

Colby-Sawyer shot 49% from the field, 41% from the three point line and 58% from the free throw line. The Pilgrims were held to shooting 25% from the field and 15% from the three point line, but averaged 69% from the free throw line.

The Chargers outscored the Pilgrims in the paint 34-14, off turnovers 21-16, with second chance points 10-7 and the Colby-Sawyer bench helped out with 23 points to the Pilgrims 17.

Colby-Sawyer controlled the game from early on jumping out to a 9-2 lead. The Pilgrims responded with their own run to tie the game at 11-11, but a Jessica Shenkel three pointer at the 11:00 minute mark in the first half would give the Chargers the lead for the remainder of the game.

The Chargers took a 35-24 lead into the half and outscored the Pilgrims 37-26 in the second half en route to their 72-50 win.

Both teams will conclude North Atlantic Conference play this week. Colby-Sawyer hosts Lyndon State College on Thursday at 5:30pm and finishes up the conference schedule at Johnson State College on Saturday. New England College hosts Johnson State College Thursday and travels to Lyndon State College Saturday.
