Men's Basketball Edged by Keene State, 91-83 in Overtime

NEW LONDON, N.H. – December 4, 2014 – Colby-Sawyer's Taylor Grande (Bedford, N.H.) scored a game-tying layup with three seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime, but Keene State outscored the Chargers 18-10 in the extra five minutes to earn a 91-83 victory Thursday evening.  

Keene State improves to 6-0 and will begin a three-game home stand to end the first semester with a Little East Conference opener against UMass Boston on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. Colby-Sawyer falls to 2-3 and will begin North Atlantic Conference action on Saturday with a 3:00 p.m. home contest against Green Mountain.

Keene State featured a balanced scoring attack with four players in double figures. Freshman Dizel Wright (Springfield, Mass.) led the team with 20 points on 9-of-13 shooting. Sophomore Lucas Hammel (Methuen, Mass.) had 18 points and four steals. Junior Nate Howard (Cheshire, Conn.) had 14 points, nine rebounds and three blocks, while junior Nick Gagliolo (Peabody, Mass.) chipped in 11 points.

Colby-Sawyer was led by a 23-point effort from senior Mike Dias (Carver, Mass.). All 23 points came in the second half and overtime. Junior Wol Majong (Manchester, N.H.) added 16 points, while senior Zach Bean (Scarborough, Maine) contributed 15 points. Taylor Grande finished with 11 points, seven rebounds, six assists and five steals.

The Owls led 36-29 at halftime after shooting 50% from the floor (15-30). Keene State scored 26 of its points in the paint. The Chargers were able to stay close with 5-of-9 shooting from beyond the arc.

Colby-Sawyer trailed by as much as 15 midway through the second half, but came all the way back to tie the game with three seconds left on the Grande layup. The Chargers finished regulation on a 17-5 in the final four minutes.

Keene State made five of eight baskets in the extra session, while holding the Chargers to one made field goal en route to the 91-83 victory.

The Owls finished the game with 49.3% shooting from the floor and took advantage of a 22-6 edge in fast break points.
