Box Score BOX SCORE

BOSTON, MA – September 20, 2011 -
The Colby-Sawyer field hockey team let a 3-1 lead slip away in a 4-3 loss to Wheelock on Tuesday evening at Winsor Field in Boston.

Junior forward Despina Savvoulides (Norwalk, CT) netted a pair of goals, including the game-winner with just 1:50 to lift the Wildcats to the victory. With the win, the Wildcats improve to 1-6 on the season, while the Chargers fall to 2-4.

Savvoulides broke a 3-3 tie when she slipped behind the Colby-Sawyer defense and took a shot from the left corner of the box that was stopped by the Chargers' keeper, only to be collected by Savvoulides for a shot into the far corner for the game-winning score for the Wildcats at 68:10 of the second half.

The goal capped a furious three-goal rally by Wheelock to erase a 3-1 deficit. Senior midfielder Kylie Hefford (Exeter, NH) knotted the contest at 3-3 at the 48:22 mark for the Wildcats. She collected a rebound off her own shot and deposited another shot into the left corner of the cage for her first tally of the season. Junior forward Taylor Rogers (Essex, MA) scored just 92 seconds earlier to pull the home team to within 3-2. Savvoulides' shot resulted in a long rebound that Rogers fired into the back of the cage for her first marker of the season at 46:50 of the second period.

Colby-Sawyer got on the board first when freshman defender Hannah Coggins (West Newbury, MA) collected a rebound off a shot from freshman forward Ally Lamoreux (Manchester, ME) and fired a shot from in front of the cage that found wood for a 1-0 lead at 14:10 of the first half. The Chargers added to their advantage when senior midfielder Molly Prudden's (Andover, MA) shot was deflected by the Wheelock keeper and found the stick of freshman forward Katharine Kessler (Newport, NH), who unleashed the scoring strike at the 26:48 mark of the first stanza for a 2-0 margin.

The Wildcats owned a 7-5 shot advantage at the intermission and held a 5-4 edge in penalty corners.

Savvoulides cut the deficit in half with her first goal of the evening when Rogers sent a cross from the left corner to the front of the cage, where it was buried by Savvoulides just 4:45 into the second half to make it 2-1. Freshman forward Nykki Stritzinger (Bel Air, MD) restored the Colby-Sawyer two-goal cushion by converting a penalty stroke at 44:50 for a 3-1 lead.

Sophomore goalie Michelle Greene (Mansfield, MA) made four saves to earn the victory, while sophomore keeper Colleen O'Hurley (Weare, NH) stopped 11 shots for the Chargers.

Wheelock College will be in action again Thursday, September 22 when it hosts Framingham State University at 8:00 p.m. at Winsor Field, while Colby-Sawyer travels to Castleton, VT for a 7:00 p.m. match on September 23 vs. Castleton State College.
