BOSTON, Mass. – December 6, 2011 - Senior Meghan Black (Roslindale, Mass.) connected on a layup with six seconds remaining as the Suffolk University Women's Basketball (5-2 overall) team outlasted the Colby-Sawyer College Chargers (6-2 overall) with a 63-61 victory on Tuesday evening at the Regan Gymnasium.
Black finished with nine points and a game-high 11 rebounds as the Rams snap a two-game skid and move to a 5-2 mark on the season, while the Chargers drop to 6-2 on the year.
The Rams were able to hold the lead throughout the entire contest until junior
Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) evened the game at 61 with 1:37 remaining as she connected on one of her four three-pointers in the contest.
Suffolk held an eight-point lead with six minutes remaining as Vienneau hit a three-pointer to make it 59-51.
Colby-Sawyer would answer right back as they did throughout the contest as DeSanty answered with a three-point shot of her own as the Chargers took advantage of four Rams' turnover to bring the game back within a point.
Freshman Tori Brillaud (North Andover, Mass.) gave Suffolk some breathing room as she scored off on a offensive rebound to give the Rams a 61-58 lead with 2:23 remaining.
The Rams started the contest off hot as they held a 14-point margin with five minutes remaining in the first half as freshman Brianna Haberle (Smithfield, R.I.) scored two of her six points in the contest.
DeSanty would lead the charge in the opening frame as well for Colby-Sawyer as her three-point shot capped a 13-0 run for the visitors as they cut the Rams lead to 33-32 with fifty-one seconds remaining in the half.
Back to back baskets by Vienneau and Haberle would give the Rams a 37-32 cushion heading into the break.
Junior
Sammi Lehr (Cohasset, Mass.) led all scorers in the game as she scored 16 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field for the Chargers, while DeSanty had 12 points and eight rebounds. Junior
Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) scored 13 points.
Vienneau finished with a team-high 13 points, while freshman Ilana Quadri (Sudbury, Mass.) scored 11 points for the Rams. Senior Mary Garon (Auburn, N.H.) and Brillaud both scored eight points and collected eight rebound for Suffolk as well.
Both teams will be back action this week. Colby Sawyer will be taking on Thomas College in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) matchup at 7:30pm on Friday. Suffolk will travel to Nichols College in non Conference matchup at 7pm on Thursday.
