NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 25, 2011 – The Middlebury women's basketball team won their third straight game after defeating Colby-Sawyer, 87-70 in a non-conference contest, Tuesday evening. Middlebury's Maddie Moreau (Canton, N.Y.) led all scorers with 21 points.
The Panthers improve to 12-3 on the season, while Colby-Sawyer pulls even at 8-8.
Moreau shot 8-15 from the floor and knocked down five of nine three-point tries to lead five Middlebury players in double-figures. Sophomore Tracy Borsinger (Chatham, N.J.) had 18 points. Senior Lauren Sanchez (Seattle, Wash.) and junior Stephany Surrette (Worcester, Mass.) each shot 5-10 from the floor and 3-3 from the free throw line to end up with 13 points apiece. Surrette also added a game best 10 rebounds. Junior Brittany Perfetti (Clifton Heights, Pa.) registered 10 points.
Colby-Sawyer was led by a 20-point effort from sophomore
Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.). Sophomore
Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) scored 18 points and recorded a career-high 12 assists for the Chargers. Freshman
Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) added 12 points on 6-11 shooting. Junior
Kaitlin Fifield (Warner, N.H.) contributed nine points and seven boards off the bench.
The Chargers controlled the first 11 minutes of the game holding a steady lead throughout. Trailing 27-21 with nine minutes left in the first, Middlebury used a 14-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 35-27 lead. The teams traded a few baskets in the final four minutes of the half and the Panthers held a 44-33 advantage at the break.
Middlebury held a comfortable lead for the entire second half and was up as much as 23 points en route to the 87-70 road victory. The Panthers held advantages in rebounds (42-31) and second chance points (19-4). Colby-Sawyer scored 50 of their 70 points in the paint.
Colby-Sawyer will return to The Commonwealth Coast Conference action on Thursday with a 5:30 pm tip at Eastern Nazarene. Middlebury will host Keene State at 5:00 pm on Thursday.
