Women's Basketball Falls to New England College, 82-67

HENNIKER, N.H. – January 11, 2011 -
The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell at New England College, 82-67 Tuesday evening in Henniker.

New England College women's basketball forward Rachel Williams (Chapel Hill, N.C.) finished with a game-high 30 points.

With the win the Pilgrims grab their first conference win of the season evening their conference record at 1-1 and improving to 8-6 overall. The loss drops the Chargers to 5-7 overall and evens their conference record at 1-1.

NEC would jump out to the early lead scoring the first six points of the game and would extend the lead to 13 up 25-12 midway through the opening half. The Colby-Sawyer offense would respond as the Chargers would close out the half on an 11-1 run knotting the game at 37-37 heading into halftime.

The Chargers would grab their first lead of the game just seconds into the second period up 39-38. The Pilgrims would answer with a 7-0 run to regain the lead and go up 47-41 with just over 15 minutes to play. Colby-Sawyer would get within three but NEC would pull away leading by as many 16 with five minutes on the clock. The Chargers would get as close as 11 in the final two minutes of play but the Pilgrims would eventually hold on for the 82-67 victory.

In addition to her 30 points Williams pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds. NEC's Jenna Ledy (Pickford, Mich.) was the only other Pilgrim in double-figures finishing with 15 points, while Shauntaye Pumphret (Bristol, N.H.) chipped in nine points for NEC.

Leading the way for Colby-Sawyer was Ashley Brewer (Moodus, Conn.) who finished with 18 points on 6-for-11 shooting. Colby-Sawyer's Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) scored 16 points and Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) finished the evening with 12 points. Leading the Chargers on the boards was Mari Meserve (Carver, Mass.) who grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds.

NEC returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 15 when they host conference opponent Nichols College. Colby-Sawyer will also take the court on Saturday hosting conference foe Anna Maria College.
