Colby-Sawyer Upset by Salve Regina, 68-56 in Opening Round of TCCC Playoffs

NEW LONDON, N.H. – February 24, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team was upset by Salve Regina Tuesday evening, 68-56, in the TCCC Quarterfinals. Despite double-doubles from both Emma Pasquale (Eliot, Maine) and Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.), the Chargers were unable to overcome the hot shooting of Salve Regina and their senior co-captain Allegra Lovoy (Charlestown, R.I.) who finished with 28 points.

The Seahawks jumped out to a 15-4 lead behind the shooting of Lovoy and Erin Phillips (Morristown, N.J.). However, the Chargers battled back to cut lead to 19-16, after senior Kayt Racz (Worthington, Mass.) scored eight points, including two crucial three-point field goals. Lovoy continued her stellar play, as she scored six straight points for Salve, increasing their lead to seven, at 25-18.

Again, the Chargers were able to slice the lead down, this time to two, after an Ellen Naughton's (Reading, Mass.) lay-up, but once again Lovoy took charge scoring on will. The Seahawks closed out the half on an 11-3 run, as Lovoy finished with 20 points in the half. Heading into the locker room, the Seahawks held a 10 point advantage at 38-28.

In the second half, the Chargers were able to cool down Lovoy, as she was only able to score eight points, but Phillips and freshman Lindsay Shorey (Ashland, Mass.) stepped up their offensive play to keep Salve Regina on top.

Colby-Sawyer was able to trim the lead down to nine points, when senior Kristen Romanko (Mansfield, Mass.) hit a straight-away three-pointer with 13 minutes remaining, but that was as close as they would come to the Seahawks.

Chargers' senior Emma Pasquale (Eliot, Maine) and junior Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass) tried their best keep the team in it, as they both registered double-doubles, but Colby-Sawyer could not overcome the deficit.

As a team Salve Regina, shot 43.3% and was 12-15 from the free-throw line, while the Chargers shot 32.2 % from the field and only 13-24 at the line.

Lovoy finished with a game-high 28 points along with eight rebounds and seven assists. Phillips was one rebound shy of a double-double, as she concluded with 14 points and nine board. Shorey shot 5-7 from the floor en route to scoring 11 points.

Duffy finished with 10 points and a game-high 13 rebounds, and Pasquale recorded 10 points and 10 rebounds. Racz recorded a team-high 11 points.

Colby-Sawyer finishes the season with a 16-9 mark, while Salve Regina will move on to the semi-finals, where they will travel to No. 1 seed Nichols, Thursday evening.
