NEW LONDON, N.H. – January 13, 2009 – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team cruised to a 77-59 victory over New England College on Tuesday night. Sophomore Katelyn Stravinsky (Norwell, Mass.) led all Chargers with a career-high 15 points, on 6-9 shooting. With the win, Colby-Sawyer improves to 8-5 overall and 2-0 in the conference. The Pilgrims fall to 6-7 overall and 0-2 in TCCC action.
The first 10 minutes of the game were played evenly, with the Pilgrims holding a slim 21-20 lead. Seniors LaShawnda Wilson (Burlington, Vt.) and Ashley Hutton (Lebanon, N.H.) paced New England College in the first half with 10 and seven points, respectively. Trailing by one, Colby-Sawyer went on a 13-0 run over the next five minutes to give themselves a cushion. The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the first half which ended on a 30-foot three-pointer buzzer-beater by NEC's Wilson. Colby-Sawyer took a 42-30 lead into the locker room at the half and held a 30-15 edge in rebounding. Stravinsky poured in 10 of her 15 points in the first stanza. Junior Terri Duffy (Marshfield, Mass.) had a solid first half with nine points and eight rebounds.
The Chargers held a steady lead throughout the second half and was led by senior Emma Pasquale (Eliot, Maine). She finished the game with 11 points, 13 rebounds and four blocks. Senior Stevi Valle (Wales, Mass.) contributed seven points and a game-high seven assists.
Wilson finished with a game-high 19 points for the Pilgrims. Junior Kendall Wilson (Lyndeborough, N.H.) tallied 10 points and five rebounds.
Duffy finished with 13 points, 12 rebounds, three blocks and two steals. Freshman Maggie Rossi (Fairhaven, Mass.) had a solid game in the back court for the Chargers as she scored eight points and dished out five assists.
The Chargers continue their home stand on Saturday, January 17 with a contest against Anna Maria at 1:00 p.m.
