For Yener Bartolon '25, soccer has been a constant throughout his life. From his early days playing competitively in Florida to guarding the net for the Chargers and now working behind the scenes at one of the world's largest sporting events, the game has shaped both his personal and professional journey.
This summer, Bartolon joined the Fan Operations team for the FIFA Club World Cup in Miami, helping create memorable experiences for thousands of supporters from around the globe.
But long before stepping onto the international stage, Bartolon was making his mark at Colby-Sawyer.
A graduate of Palm Beach Gardens High School, where he served as team captain, Bartolon brought his competitive spirit to New London in 2022. He quickly became a standout goalkeeper for the Chargers, starting 17 of 18 games as a freshman and recording 124 saves — the second-highest total in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC). His impressive debut season earned him a spot on the GNAC All-Rookie Team, and he was named GNAC Goalkeeper of the Week during the opening week of competition
In 2023, Bartolon started 10 matches, tallied 45 saves and posted a 2.17 goals-against average. One of the most memorable moments of his collegiate career came when he stepped out of goal and onto the field against Vermont State University, Lyndon, scoring his first collegiate goal in a 12-0 Chargers victory.
The discipline, teamwork and perseverance Bartolon developed throughout his soccer career continued to grow during his time at Colby-Sawyer, both on and off the field.
"My experience with the Colby-Sawyer men's soccer program helped strengthen those qualities while teaching me leadership, communication and how to perform under pressure," he said. "Balancing athletics and academics prepared me for the fast-paced environment of major sporting events."
Since graduating with a sport management degree, Bartolon has continued pursuing his playing career with a semi-professional team while working toward his goal of playing professionally. At the same time, he has gained valuable experience in sports and event operations, allowing him to stay connected to the game from a different perspective.
"Balancing both has been a rewarding experience, and I'm grateful for the opportunities I've had to continue growing both on and off the field," he said.
That passion for soccer ultimately led him to an opportunity he could not refuse. After seeing a job posting for a Fan Operations position with FIFA, Bartolon submitted an application, hoping to be part of one of the sport's biggest events.
"I knew it was an opportunity I couldn't pass up," he said. "I'm glad I took the chance because it's been an incredible experience working at an event of this scale."
In his role, Bartolon assists with crowd flow, guest services and helping fans navigate the stadium. Every match day brings new challenges, with supporters arriving from every corner of the world.
"Every game day is different," he said. "Being adaptable and providing great customer service are essential. It's rewarding to play a role in making such a major international event run smoothly."
For Bartolon, one of the most memorable aspects of the experience has been seeing the global soccer community come together — and getting the chance to watch some of his childhood heroes in person.
"The passion and energy inside the stadium are unlike anything I've experienced before," he said. "One of the most memorable aspects has been getting to watch some of my favorite players — players I grew up watching and looking up to — compete in person while being part of the event behind the scenes."
The experience has also given him a new appreciation for the teamwork and preparation required to host an international sporting event.
"It's been exciting to work alongside professionals from different countries and see how much teamwork, preparation and attention to detail go into delivering an event of this magnitude," Bartolon said.
His advice to current Colby-Sawyer students interested in careers in sports is simple: Embrace every opportunity.
"Take advantage of every opportunity to gain experience, even if it's outside your comfort zone," he said. "Volunteer, apply for internships and don't be afraid to start in entry-level roles. The sports industry is built on relationships, professionalism and reliability. If you're willing to work hard, continue learning and make a positive impression, opportunities will continue to open up."
