WOMEN'S LACROSSE FALLS SHORT IN TIGHT BATTLE WITH NORWICH

Northfield, VT – The Chargers traveled to Vermont on Tuesday for a GNAC matchup with the Norwich Cadets. 

Rapid Recap: 

  • Lauren Labbe assisted Athena Merck for Norwich to put the hosts up 1-0 in the first two minutes of the game. A little less than five minutes later, Madeline Knight (Pownal, ME) scored for the Chargers to tie the game up. Grace Joly (Windham, ME) scored two minutes later to give the Chargers a 2-1 lead. Caitlin Slider scored a goal to tie the game up for Norwich, followed by Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, NH) scoring to give the Chargers a one-goal lead. Colby Magoon scored for the Cadets before the end of the quarter to make it a 3-3 ball game. 

  • The back-and-forth competitive play in the first quarter continued in the second. Elena Bronson (Monkton, VT) scored a Charger goal, followed by Sophia Albright (assisted by Caitlyn Fielder) scoring a Cadet goal. Labbe scored in the last two minutes of the half for the Cadets, but Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, NH) tied it up for the Chargers with three seconds left in the half. The game was tied 5-5 entering the halftime break. 

  • Slider assisted Merck for a Cadet goal one minute into the half. Joly assisted Knight to make the game 6-6. Joly scored about a minute later, and Merck scored about 90 seconds later. The teams were in a 7-7 draw at this point. Fielder assisted Vivian Buntin to give Norwich an 8-7 lead. 

  • Labbe scored the 9-7 goal for Norwich. Finlayson and Bronson each scored to tie the game up 9-9. Merck assisted Fielder for the Cadets with about seven minutes to go. Finlayson scored the equalizer with 4:16 left on the clock. Breanna Ricker scored for Norwich with 2:05 left in the game. The Cadets won the game 11-10. 

Inside the Numbers: 

  • Finlayson scored three goals, while Joly, Knight, and Bronson each scored two. Ponzini had one goal on the day. 

  • Merck scored three goals for the Cadets. 

  • The Chargers picked up 22 ground balls on Tuesday.

The Chargers will host Simmons on Saturday in New London at 12pm.
