NEW LONDON, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer Chargers men's tennis team are heading to the CNE Championship for the first time ever in their first year in the conference after coming back down 3-1 in the semifinals against Roger Williams.
Men's tennis joined the Conference of New England this past year and has paved the way for women's tennis to follow in their footsteps starting next year during the 2025-26 academic year. This year, the team finished 7-3 in the conference, giving them the number three seed for the tournament. In just their first year, they were able to end up in the top half of the conference, making a statement already that the Chargers have arrived.Â
Leading the way in doubles has been
Ashton Meuse (Newport, N.H.) and
Zsombor Homonnay (Budapest, Hungary),
Aidan Jensen (Essex, Vt.) and
Peyton Meuse (Newport, N.H.), and
David Dvorak (Prague, Czech Republic) and
Jacob Riis (Vineyard Haven, Mass.).Â
In the Semifinals, Homonnay would claim a 6-2, 6-3 win at number two to give the Chargers their first singles point, as Homonnay has been solid in the number two slot all year for the Chargers.
Ashton Meuse would fall short in the semifinals at the number one slot, leading the way for the Chargers.Â
Peyton Meuse, and
Aidan Jensen would both play vital roles in the semifinals against Roger Williams, and all year for the Chargers in the three and fifth slots that would lead the Chargers to where they are today. P. Meuse would battle in the three slot as he picked up a 7-6 tie breaker win in the first set. P. Meuse continued to battle in the third set, as he trailed 4-2 and dominated in the final four games to come away with the 6-4 third set win to tie the match score at 3-3.
Jensen, the lone Senior on the team fought all season long in the fifth slot and #2 in doubles as he recently surpassed 50 career doubles wins for the program. He would be the difference maker in the semifinals as he would secure the game winning point to send the Chargers into the Championship.
Two first years in
Jacob Riis and
David Dvorak have shown the bright future of the Chargers in the fourth and sixth slots in singles. Dvorak secured the game winning point in the first round against the Blue Jays, and has shined with his partner Riis in #3 doubles all year long helping the Chargers to that 7-3 record. Riis battled at the number six position all year, but would would win 7-6 in a tiebreaker in the first set of the semifinals. Riis would fight hard to win 7-6 in another tiebreaker in the second set.
The Chargers will head to Dudley, Mass. to take on #1 seed Nichols College as they look to take home their first conference championship in year one of the conference.Â
