Chargers Advance to CNE Championship

Bristol, R.I. - The Colby-Sawyer men's tennis team picked up a 4-3 win over the number two seed Roger Williams University Wednesday afternoon to advance to the Conference of New England (CNE) championship match.  
 
 
Rapid Recap:  
  • In doubles action, the Hawks would take the early 1-0 lead over the Chargers sweeping the one and two positions. 
  • The Hawks continued to extend their lead in singles action as they took a 3-1 lead over the Chargers. Junior Zsombor Homonnay (Budapest, Hungary) would claim a 6-2, 6-3 win at number two to give the Chargers their first singles point. First-year Jacob Riis (Vineyard Haven, Mass.) battled at the number six positions, as he won 7-6 in a tiebreaker in the first set, but Iker Rodriquez Alcocer would take control in the second set, taking a commanding 5-2 lead. Riis fought hard to win 7-6 in another tiebreaker in the second set to trim the Hawks lead to 3-2. Junior Peyton Meuse (Newport, N.H.) battled at the third position as he picked up a 7-6 tie breaker win in the first set, but Camden Poitras would dominate in the second set to claim a 6-1 win, forcing a third set. Meuse continued to battle in the third set, as he trailed 4-2 and dominated in the final four games to come away with the 6-4 third set win to tie the match score at 3-3. The Hawks continued to battle in the fifth singles position as the winner of this game would advance to the CNE championship round. Johnny Baldyga would win the first set 6-3, but senior Aidan Jensen (Essex, Vt.) continued to battle as he won the second set 7-5 to force a third set. Baldyga and Jensen continued to fight in the deciding set, as Jensen played a perfect service game and won 6-4 to clinch the match for the Chargers.

"They keep on doubting us, but we're still here," said senior Aidan Jensen (Essex, Vt.). "The boys showed up big to give me one last ride."

The Chargers return to action on Friday when they travel to Dudley, Massachusetts to take on number one seeded Nichols College with a start time of 2pm
