Chargers Close Out Regular Season With a 17-4 Win

Henniker, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team picked up a dominating 17-4 win over the New England College Pilgrims Wednesday afternoon. The Chargers end the regular season with a 7-4 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) record and a 10-6 overall record.  
 
Rapid Recap: 
  • Sophomore Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) would open the scoring for the Chargers and also secure her 100th career point in the first quarter for the Chargers to take the 1-0 lead. The Pilgrims responded minutes later with back-to-back goals, taking advantage of Charger turnovers to take a 2-1 lead. Junior Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) would even the score at 2-2 with a goal late in the quarter. Minutes later, Ponzini would tally her second goal of the game off a free position to extend the Chargers lead. A late goal by senior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) would give the Chargers a 4-2 lead at the end of the quarter.  
  • The Chargers would continue to stay on the attack as Finlayson recorded her second goal of the game, just two minutes into the quarter. Hanson would add two more goals, taking advantage of Pilgrims turnovers to extend the visitors' lead to 7-2 with 8:04 remaining. Senior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) would take advantage of a free position to extend the Chargers lead to 8-2. The Pilgrims continued to battle and scored late in the quarter to trim the Chargers' lead to 8-3, but a late goal by first-year Lauren Vignola (Ringwood, N.J.) would give the Chargers a commanding 9-3 lead at halftime.  
  • The visitors continued to dominate on offense as junior Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.) would take advantage of turnovers by the Pilgrims and score the Chargers tenth goal early in the third quarter. Just minutes later, Hanson would find the back of the net to extend the Chargers lead to 11-3. The teams would continue to battle and trade turnovers, but Bronson would score in the final minute of the quarter to give the Chargers a 12-3 lead.  
  • A draw control by Hanson would quickly send the Chargers on the attack in the final quarter as junior Molly Dishong (Francestown, N.H.) would score to extend the Chargers lead to 13-3.  The teams would continue to battle, but the Chargers defense remained tough and caused key turnovers that led to goals by Hanson and Finlayson late in the quarter. Meadow Gilchrist would score a goal for the Pilgrims to trim the lead to 15-4, but minutes later Ponzini would take advantage of a free position to extend the visitors' lead to 16-4 with 2:44 remaining. Kuhlthau would find the back of the net in the final seconds of the game to give the Chargers the 17-4 win over the Pilgrims.  
 
Inside the Numbers: 
  • Hanson paced the Chargers with five goals and added two ground balls and two caused turnovers. Ponzini tallied three goals, two assists, four ground balls, and three caused turnovers while Finlayson recorded three goals, one assist, and two groundballs.  
  • Kuhlthau recorded two goals, four ground balls, and five caused turnovers for the Chargers while first-year Ashley Pelletier (Bridgton, Maine) chipped in two ground balls and two caused turnovers.  
  • Senior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up the win in net for the Chargers and tallied one save.  
 
Post Game Press: 
"Today all the work from the season really paid off," said junior Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt). "We were able to control the pace of the game by staying patient on attack, winning 50/50 balls, and working for each other on our midfield transition. Our defense really shined today as well, they are a cohesive unit with great communication. I'm proud of everyone on the team!"

The Chargers return to action on Thursday when they host Simmons University in the GNAC play-in game with a 5:00 PM start.
