CHARGERS TAKE DOWN MONKS FOR FIRST TIME IN OVERTIME

STANDISH, MAINE - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team headed up to Standish, Maine to take on the Monks of Saint Joseph's College of Maine in hopes to end their three game skid where this one would go five overtimes to determine a winner. 

Rapid Recap:
  • The Monks would open up the scoring in this one thanks to an early goal by Sophia Burton. The Chargers would quickly turn it around and tie the game at one thanks to a Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) assist to First Year Lauren Vignola (Ringswood, N.J.). The Monks would go on to score the next two behind goals from Mackenzie Siebert before Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) would give the Chargers their second goal to end the quarter from Hanson. 
  • The Chargers would open the second quarter by tying the game behind an assist from Hanson that found Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.). The Chargers would go on to take the lead going into halftime thanks to an assist from Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.) that led Madeline Knight (Pownal, Maine).
  • The Monks would score to kick off the second half, before the Chargers would score three unanswered goals. Hanson would get her fourth assist of the game, finding Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine). Hanson would go on to score her first goal of the game to give the Chargers a 6-4 lead. Andrea Smith would go on to score again to put the Chargers up 7-4. Soph Kuhlthau would put the Chargers up 8-5 to end the third quarter after the Monks put in their fifth goal. 
  • The Monks would go on to score five unanswered goals to start the fourth quarter that made it 10-8. With three minutes to go, the Chargers took control and would tie the game thanks to goals from Heather Hanson. Hanson would score two a minute apart to send the game into overtime.
  • Overtime would go back and fourth until Ponzini would recieve a free position attempt, leading to a shot that would give the Chargers an 11-10 win in the fifth overtime. The Chargers would defeat the Monks for the first time in program history.
Inside the Numbers:
  • Hanson would lead the way with a hat trick and dishing out four assists while also grabbing five ground balls. Kuhlthau would score two goals herself while grabbing seven ground balls. Cecilia Ponzini would not only score the game winning goal, but would also record her 100th career point on the game winner.
  • First Year Lauren Vignola would pick up a goal, while Andrea Smith would put in two. Madeline Knight would score one herself as well.
  • Senior goal keeper, AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) would pick up her sixth win of the season playing every minute in net, recording 9 saves.

"We left it all out there, giving our best effort every step of the way" said Junior, Cecilia Ponzini. "We stuck to the game plan, stayed focused, and, more importanly, we stuck together as one, pushing through challenges and supporting each other in every moment."

The Chargers return to Sally Shaw Veitch Field on Saturday April 5th, as they celebrate their four seniors for senior day with start time scheduled for 12pm.
