Chargers Strong Finish Not Enough in Loss

New London, N.H. - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team fell at home to Emmanuel College 14-9 on Wednesday afternoon.  
 
Rapid Recap: 
  • The visiting Saints would open the quarter with three goals as they took advantage of errors committed by the Chargers. Sophomore Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) would open the scoring for the Chargers after taking advantage of a foul committed by the Saints. The visiting team quickly responded with their fourth goal of the game to extend their lead with 2:02 remaining. The Saints would end the quarter with another goal to take a commanding 5-1 lead over the Chargers 
  • The Saints would score their sixth goal of the game taking advantage of a turnover by the Chargers and then responded twenty seconds later with another goal to extend their lead to 7-1 with 13:10 remaining in the second quarter. The Saints would score their eighth goal of the game late in the quarter, but the Chargers continued to battle as Finlayson found the back of the net to trim the Saints lead with the assist coming from sophomore Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine). Junior Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) would score late in the quarter to trim the Saints lead to 8-3 with an assist from senior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.). The Saints would continue to take control of the draw and scored their ninth goal of the game to take a 9-3 lead over the Chargers heading into halftime.  
  • The Chargers would come out hot in the third quarter as Smith found the back of the net thirty-five seconds into the third quarter to trim the Saints lead to 9-4. The Chargers offense continued to battle as first-year Lauren Vignola (Ringwood, N.J.) scored her first goal of the game with 11:03 remaining. A minute later Ponzini would take advantage of a free position attempt and scored the Chargers sixth goal of the game. The teams would continue to fight late in the quarter, but Vignola would trim the lead with her second goal of the game as the home team trailed 9-7 with 5:01 left. The Saints would respond in the final minute of the quarter with two quick goals to take an 11-7 lead at the end of the third quarter.  
  • The Saints would use a free position attempt early in the final quarter to extend their lead to 12-7 as Madeline Wright sent the ball into the back of the net. Two minutes later Vignola responded with back-to-back goals for the home team to trim the Saints lead to 12-9 with assists from Ponzini and junior Elena Bronson (Bristol, Vt.). The Saints would score two more goals late in the quarter, taking advantage of turnovers by the Chargers to secure the 14-9 win on Wednesday.  
 
Inside the Numbers: 
  • Vignola tallied four goals and one caused turnover while Ponzini added two goals, four caused turnovers, and four groundballs. Finlayson chipped in two goals and two groundballs for the Chargers.  
  • Senior Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) paced the Chargers with eight caused turnovers and added four groundballs while first-year Brooke Farquhar (Gorham, Maine) chipped in three caused turnovers and four groundballs.  
  • Senior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up the loss but registered eight saves and five groundballs for the Chargers.  
 
Up Next: 
The Chargers return to action on Saturday when they travel to Nashua, N.H. to take on inner-state foe Rivier University with a 2:00 PM start.
