Panama City Beach, Fla. - The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team dropped their first game of the Spring Fling trip to Framingham State University 16-7.
Rapid Recap:
- Sophomore Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) would open the scoring Monday evening by firing a shot into the back of the net and registering the first goal of the game. A draw control by junior Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.) would spark another Chargers goal coming from first-year Lauren Vignola (Ringwood, N.J.). One minute later, the Rams would respond with a goal of their own to trail the Chargers 2-1. Sophomore Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine) would extend the Chargers lead to 3-1 with a goal of her own. The Rams continued to battle and scored back-to-back goals to tie the score at 3-3 late in the opening quarter. Finlayson would tally her second goal of the game in the final minutes to give the Chargers the 4-3 at the end of the first quarter.
- The Rams would score first in the second quarter to tie the game at 4-4. The Rams would take advantage of turnovers by the Chargers to knock down back-to-back goals to take a 6-4 lead late in the second quarter. The teams continued to trade ground balls and caused turnovers late in the quarter, but the Rams would continue to control on the attack and extend their lead to 8-4 as the second quarter came to a close.
- The teams would open the third quarter by trading caused turnovers back and forth, but the Rams would take advantage of Charger foul to score their ninth goal of the game. The Rams would continue to control the offense and went on a 6-0 run to take a 14-4 lead over the Chargers at the end of the third quarter.
- Senior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) would knock down the first goal of the final quarter off of a free possession. The Rams quickly responded with a goal of their own to extend their lead. Ponzini would fire a shot on target that resulted in a goal to trim the Rams lead. The team would continue to trade caused turnovers and shots on goal throughout the fourth quarter, as Kelley DeBellis would score another goal for the Rams with three minutes left to play. Senior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) would score the Chargers seventh goal in the final minute, but the Rams would pull away with the 16-7 win.
Inside the Numbers:
- Finlayson led the way for the Chargers with two goals while Smith, Vignola, Hanson all chipped in a goal apiece. Kuhlthau recorded one goal, three caused turnovers, and two ground balls while Ponzini tallied one goal, three assists, and three groundballs for the Chargers.
- Senior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up the loss but registered eight saves while allowing 16 goals.
