Amcats Cruise Past Chargers

PAXTON, MASSACHUSETTS - The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team fell on the road Saturday afternoon to Anna Maria College, 75-37.

  • The Amcats opened the game with a layup and free throw, but first-year Hayden Wilkins (North Concord, Vt.) answered with a drive to the basket for a layup, putting the Chargers on the board. Junior Makenna Grillone (Walpole, N.H.) hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 5-5 with 7:41 left in the first quarter. The teams continued to trade baskets, but the Amcats capitalized on fouls committed by the Chargers taking a 16-12 lead at the end of the opening quarter. 
  • The Amcats continued to hit shots in the second quarter, but first-year Sierra Derby (Richford, Vt.) made two free throws to cut the home team's lead to 20-14 with 5:18 left. First-year Tanner Drury (Bethel, Vt.) knocked down a three-pointer to narrow the gap, but the Amcats outscored the Chargers 13-3 to extend their lead to 33-17 by halftime.
  • The Amcats started strong in the third quarter with a layup in the paint, but Grillone responded with a three-pointer for the Chargers. The Chargers would struggle to make shots as Anna Maria went on a19-1 run, but Drury would end the scoring drought with her second three-pointer of the game with 1:59 remaining. First-year Molly Denis (Plattsburgh, N.Y.) added a free throw in the final seconds, but the Amcats took a commanding 56-25 lead as the third quarter came to a close. 
  • The Amcats continued to knock down shots in the final quarter, with sophomore Emma Felker (Dracut, Mass.) and Derby each chipping in shots of their own to trim the home team's lead. Anna Maria took advantage of fouls committed by the Chargers to increase their lead, but Denis hit a three-pointer in the final minutes, but it was not enough as Anna Maria secured the 75-37 win. 
Inside the Numbers:
  • Grillone paced the Chargers with 10 points (3-9 FG, 3-6 3PT, 1-2 FT) and three rebounds while Derby tallied seven points (2-4 FG, 3-4 FT) and three rebounds. Drury added six points (2-6 FG, 2-4 3PT), three rebounds, and two assists for the Chargers. 
  • Marinique Reddin led the way for the Amcats with 25 points (9-14 FG, 1-2 3PT, 6-8 FT), 10 rebounds, and eight steals while Madison Paulhus recorded 18 points (6-11 FG, 1-2 3PT, 5-6 FT), three rebounds, and three steals.

The Chargers return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Nashua, N.H. to take on Rivier University with a 5:00 PM start.
