WOMEN'S BASKETBALL CLOSES TOURNAMENT WITH WIN

Brooklyn, NY – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team won against Medgar Evers College in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament on Sunday. 

Rapid Recap: 

  • A three pointer by Makenna Grillone (Walpole, NH) kicked things off for the Chargers early in the first quarter. Lauren MacDonald (Tilton, NH) and Emily Leonard (Chester, NH) would both convert layups as the game would be all even at eight points each. Tanner Drury (Bethel, VT) would drain a three towards the end of the quarter. The Chargers would trail Medgar Evers 19-15 after the first quarter. 

  • A three by Leonard and a layup by Grillone would see the Chargers go on a 5-0 run early in the second quarter. Leonard would drain another three two minutes later to give the Chargers a one-point lead. Leonard would score her third three of the second quarter to give the Chargers a 29-26 lead. Leonard and Grillone would both make layups as the Chargers would go into the half with a 36-34 lead. 

  • Drury and Grillone would both make baskets to kick off the third quarter. Buckets by MacDonald, Grillone, and Catherine Chick (Glen, NH) would see the Chargers take a 46-38 lead. Another three from Leonard, a layup from Emma Greenan (Saint Johnsbury, VT) and a layup and a free throw from MacDonald would all be part of an 8-0 run for the Chargers. The Chargers would lead 54-43 going into the fourth quarter. 

  • Leonard continued the high-scoring performance with a layup and a three in the first two minutes of the fourth quarter. Chick would score two fast break layups to give the Chargers a 64-47 lead. Leonard would score a three, and Drury would make two free throws about a minute later. Greenan and Drury would both convert baskets in the final two minutes of the game. The Chargers would win the game 76-59. 

Inside the Numbers: 

  • Leonard scored a career-high 24 points on Sunday. Leonard was a perfect 6-6 from three-point range. Leonard's six three-pointers is tied for fourth for the program record of single-game three-pointers made. 

  • Greenan scored a career-high 10 points and recorded a career-high 12 rebounds. Greenan led both teams in rebounds. 

  • Grillone ended the game with 12 points and four rebounds. 

  • Aaliyah Lyons led the scoring for Medgar Evers with 19 points. 

  • The Chargers shot 42.1% from three-point-range.

The Chargers will travel north to play Plymouth State University on Wednesday at 5pm
