Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

CHARGERS KICK OFF TOURNAMENT AGAINST TWO TIME DEFENDING NATIONAL CHAMPS

Brooklyn, NY – The Colby-Sawyer women's basketball team took on the two-time defending national champion New York University in the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament on Saturday. 

Rapid Recap: 

  • Lauren MacDonald (Tilton, NH) and Emma Greenan (Saint Johnsbury, VT) would each score four points early in the match, as the Chargers would trail the Violets 13-8. The Chargers would keep the game close, as Emily Leonard (Chester, NH) scored a layup, and made a free throw to make it a three-point play. With one second left on the clock, Molly Denis (Plattsburgh, NY) scored a layup. The Violets led 32-13 after the first quarter.  

  • Catherine Chick (Glen, NH) and MacDonald would each supply two points early in the second quarter. Makenna Grillone (Walpole, NH) subsequently drained a three. Moments later, Tanner Drury (Bethel, VT) and Grillone would each make a basket as part of an 11-6 run for the Chargers. Drury would make a jumper for the Chargers, but the Violets would have the lead going into the half. 

  • MacDonald would make a layup early in the third quarter. Grillone would make a free throw shortly after. NYU would go on an 8-0 run, but the Chargers would keep going. Drury made a free throw. MacDonald, Drury, and Grillone would all make free throws in the rest of the third quarter, as the Violets would lead going into the fourth quarter. 

  • MacDonald and Leonard would both make baskets in the first five minutes of the fourth quarter. Chick would later score a layup for the Chargers. The Violets would go on to win the game 115-42. 

Inside the Numbers: 

  • MacDonald led the Chargers in points (11) and went 100% from the field and the free throw line in the first half. 

  • Greenan led the Chargers in rebounds (9) and had the second most rebounds in the game from both teams. 

  • Drury had seven points and six rebounds on Saturday. 

  • Caroline Peper led NYU in points (20). 

  • The Chargers scored 26 points in the paint on Saturday.

The Chargers will play their final game of the Dr. Betty Shabazz Tournament on Sunday when they take on Medgar Evers College at 12pm in Brooklyn, New York.
