NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team concluded regular season action on Wednesday falling to Vermont State University - Castleton by a 9-4 final.
Rapid Recap
- The Spartans took a 1-0 lead as Brandon Ramirez launched a home run over left field to give the visitors the lead. Colby-Sawyer evened the score as sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) got caught in a pickle play to score first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) who stole home.
- In the top half of the third inning Castleton took the lead right back getting three runs on two hits including a two RBI double by Ramirez to take the 4-1 advantage. In the fourth the Spartans took a 5-1 lead as a hit and run play worked to perfection. Colby-Sawyer got a run back in the bottom of the fourth as Montalvo singled home Roeger who reached on a single.
- In the top half of the fifth and sixth innings the Spartans tacked on four more runs to take a 9-2 lead. In the bottom of the ninth the Chargers put up a fight with two runs on a graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) RBI single with a throwing error scoring the other run.
On the Mound:
- Sophomore Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) started the game going two innings allowing one run with one strikeout. Senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) threw one inning allowing three runs. First year Hayden Goerlich (Amherst, N.H.) was next throwing two innings allowing two runs. Sophomore Justin Powers (Peabody, Mass.) allowed three runs in the next inning. Junior Josh Finkle (Littleton, N.H.) had the clean seventh inning, while first year Colin Burchard (Upton, Mass.) threw a clean inning with two punchouts. First year Trevor Robichaud (Leominster, Mass.) closed out the game with a strikeout and zero hits or runs allowed.
At the Plate:
- Senior Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) closed out his final game in New London going 2-for-2 from the plate. Montalvo went 2-for-3 with a RBI, while sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) added a 2-for-5 with a run scored.
