Dennis' Big Day Leads Chargers Over Anna Maria in GNAC Playoffs

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team has picked up their first playoff win in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) after stunning Anna Maria by a 10-8 final. First year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) had an unstoppable performance in the win with a homerun and four RBIs in the win.

Rapid Recap
  • The AMCATS struck first getting two runs on an RBI double play and a RBI single to give the visitors a 2-0 lead. The Chargers chipped away right away in the first as graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) singled up the middle and then sophomore Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine) launched a double to score O'Brien and trim the deficit to 2-1. In the bottom of the second the Chargers evened the score as Dennis blasted his second homerun of the season. 
  • In the third inning the Chargers took over the momentum scoring six runs on five hits. It started with a RBI single by O'Brien. Dennis followed it up with a two RBI single. Sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) kept it going with a ribby single, before coming across on a wild pitch to plate the seventh run for the Chargers. Sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) closed out the RBIs getting hit by a pitch to get the eighth run home. Anna Maria battled back with three runs in the top half of the fourth all on RBI singles. Sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) stayed strong getting a double play ground out to keep the score at 8-5. Dennis continued to thrive with a RBI single to score first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) in the bottom of the fourth. The 10th run came across on a key RBI by first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) scoring Dennis. 
  • In the top half of the sixth the AMCATS continued to chip away with a pair of runs, but sophomore Marshall Donahue (Montpelier, Vt.) got out of the jam, before tossing a quick seventh inning. Anna Maria added one final run in the ninth inning on a sacrifice fly, but junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) closed it out for the win.
On the Mound:
  • Watson picked up his seventh win of the year tossing five innings allowing four earned runs with a single strikeout. Donahue followed with 2.1 innings allowing just a single earned run with a strikeout. Mullen closed it out with five outs recorded including a strikeout to get his seventh save. 
At the Plate:
  • Dennis was a star for the Chargers going 3-for-3 with a homer, four RBIs, three runs scored, a pair of walks and a stolen bag. O'Brien went 3-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI. McLeer tallied a 2-for-3 day with a double, RBI and two stolen bases. Staffier added a 2-for-4 day with a run scored and a RBI.

"I wanted to come in and just help at the plate as best I can and I did that today", said first year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.). "We are going to come back and play Charger baseball tomorrow. We aren't going to change a thing and senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) is gonna pitch well for us."

The Chargers will continue pod play tomorrow starting with a game against Mitchell at 12:00 PM.
