Chargers' Pitching Holds Dean Scoreless in Sunday Sweep

FRANKLIN, Mass. — The Chargers baseball team remained undefeated in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) play on Sunday after defeating Dean in both games of the twin bill. Colby-Sawyer pitching only allowed nine hits over the two games with zero Bulldogs crossing the plate.

Rapid Recap Game One (Win 10-0):
  • The Chargers jumped on board early with a two-out rally as sophomore Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) doubled home first year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) and sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.). Sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) added two more runs with a single into left scoring Cruz and first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.). In the second inning the Chargers plated their fifth run of the day as graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) ripped a ball through the right side to score sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) who led off the inning with a double.
  • The offense stayed consistent in the third inning and fourth inning getting a run in each as the lead blossomed to 7-0. Sophomore Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine) reached via an error to score Cruz who doubled for a second time to get in scoring position, while the 4th Dennis plated Carignan on a sacrifice fly to centerfield. Watson was tremendous on the mound only allowing two hits as we headed into the fifth inning.
  • Watson gave himself some more run support with a two RBI single to score McLeer and sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) as the lead grew to 9-0. Colby-Sawyer got the final run of game one in the seventh with a RBI groundout by Watson to score McLeer.
On the Mound:
  • Watson improved to 3-1 on the year with the win tossing six shutout innings with three strikeouts and three hits allowed. First year Colin Burchard (Upton, Mass.) closed things out with an easy inning with a punch out.
At the Plate:
  • Cruz led the offense with a 4-for-4 afternoon with three doubles, two RBI and two runs scored. Watson went 2-for-5 with a game-high three RBI with a run scored and a double. McLeer went 1-for-3 with a single-game record four stolen bases to go with two runs scored and a RBI. Carignan added a 1-for-3 afternoon with two runs scored, a pair of stolen bags and two walks.
Rapid Recap Game Two (Win 3-0):
  • The second game was a non-conference matchup between the two sides only slated for seven innings.
  • Colby-Sawyer took an early lead over the Bulldogs as Dennis scored on a bad throw from the catcher to third. First year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) also scored in the inning on an error by the pitcher as the Chargers led 2-0 after two.
  • In the third inning the Chargers got an insurance run as O'Brien launched his fifth homerun of the season to extend the lead. The best chance for the Bulldogs came in the fifth inning as the home team had the bases loaded with two outs, but sophomore Marshall Donahue (Montpelier, Vt.) came in and got a clutch out to retire the chance. The Bulldogs would not get another runner in scoring position as the Chargers rolled to the sweep.
On the Mound:
  • Senior Zach Rogers picked up his second win of the year tossing four innings of work allowing three hits with two strikeouts. First year Trevor Robichaud (Leominster, Mass.) was first out of the bullpen getting two outs while allowing two hits and a walk. Donahue got the final out of the fifth. Junior Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) pitched a clean sixth inning before junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) picked up his third save of the year throwing the seventh with a strikeout.
At the Plate:
  • O'Brien plated the lone RBI in the game going 2-for-3 with the homerun while also getting a stolen bag. Dennis went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a steal, while Staffier went 1-for-3 with a run scored and a stolen bag.
Post Game Press:
"We had a great week of practice this week to get us ready, despite not having played since last week", said sophomore Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.). "Our offense delivered again and the pitching staff, from starters to each bullpen guy, executed when we needed them too. Overall, it was a great pair of team wins and great momentum heading into tomorrow."
