Chargers' Offense Explodes in 20-1 Win Over Mitchell

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Chargers women's lacrosse team picked up its fourth Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) on the season on Saturday besting Mitchell by a 20-1 score. 

Rapid Recap:
  • Colby-Sawyer opened up firing taking a 5-0 lead in the first four minutes of play. First year Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) opened the scoring, followed by two goals by first year Andrea Smith (Gray, Maine) and single strikes by graduate student Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) and junior Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.). Junior Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) continued the Chargers attack with the next two goals of the game followed by the first collegiate goal by first year Emily Weagle (Clinton, Mass.). First year Gracie Pizon (Stratham, N.H.) and senior Mary Charity (Somerville, Mass.) ended the scoring in the first quarter, each getting goals of their own as the lead was 10-0 headed into the second. 
  • Graduate student Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.) continued the success offensively for the Chargers with a free position goal to push the lead to 11. Smith registered two more goals, while Finlayson and senior Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) each added goals of their own as the lead hit 15. Stevens closed out the half with her second goal of the day as the Charger lead was 16-0 headed into the break.
  • Hanson started the third quarter with back-to-back assists to Kuhlthau and Stevens as the lead hit 18-0. Weagle tallied her second goal of the afternoon on a free position to push the lead further with 15 minutes to play. 
  • The Mariners ended the shutout with 9:40 to play, but the Chargers would end the game with a 20th goal from Romo as Colby-Sawyer rolled to a 20-1 win.

"As always, we just had a great time on the field playing Colby-Sawyer lacrosse", said graduate student Sydney Stevens (Laconia, N.H.). "We're hoping to carry this energy and momentum with us going into these busy upcoming weeks."

Inside The Numbers:
  • Stevens led the offensive attack with three goals and an assist. Smith notched a four-goal day. Kuhlthau registered a hat-trick with a caused turnover, while Hanson added a goal, two assists, two grounders and three draws. Finlayson registered two goals and an assist, while Weagle and Romo each added two goals. 
  • Junior AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) picked up the win in 15 minutes, while senior Simone Long (Wales, Maine) tallied three saves in 45 minutes.

The Chargers will be back in action on April 9th hosting Rivier with a 4:00 PM start.
