NEW LONDON, N.H. — Colby-Sawyer Baseball faced off with Great Northeast Athletic conference opponent Rivier University on Saturday splitting results 18-8 and 16-4 on Senior Day.
Rapid Recap Game One (Loss 18-8):
- The Chargers got on the board first in the first inning on Saturday with a sophomore Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) double to right center and a score from sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.). The Raiders would respond in the second with a sacrifice fly from Aliberti allowing Normand to reach home. The third inning would be the Chargers final lead of game with Carignan stealing home on an error and Johnson sending a sacrifice fly over to left field allowing graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) to reach home taking a 3-1 lead.
- The Raiders would take over the fourth inning with a solo homer from Reis which would set the tone to the inning. The Raiders bats would come alive with a pair of doubles allowing five runs to score. A Gulezian triple deep into left center field would increase the lead to 8-3 before the flood gates would open allowing the visitors to take a 12-3 lead before the inning would come to an end.
- Johnson and senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.) would attempt a response both ripping home runs bringing the game within six. A clutch bunt from sophomore Janai Cruz (Manchester, N.H.) would lead to two more runs to scoring bring the game to 12-8 in favor of the Raiders.
- The rest of the competition would fall in favor of the Raiders who would add six more runs off of hot bats and aggressive base running for a 18-8 final.
On the Mound:
- Sophomore Will Carpenter (Medfield, Mass.) took home the loss for the Chargers going 3-3 on the season allowing eight runs, striking out three and walking one. Junior Kam Lovelette (Enosburg Falls, Vt.) pitched one inning striking out the side allowing one hit and two runs.
At the Plate:
- Johnson led the offense for the Chargers going 3-for-4 at the plate with two runs and three ribbies off of two doubles and one home run.
Rapid Recap Game Two (Win 16-4):
- The Raiders would look to set the tone early in game two with a big triple from Gulezian allowing two runs to score taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning. Carignan would continue his hitting streak into game two in the bottom of the first batting in a run with a single up the right side. First year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.). would bat in the tying run singling up the middle allowing O'Brien to score.
- The second inning would be the beginning of the end with the home team scoring five runs off of hot bats. Sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) and Carignan would reach first and second before O'Brien would send a ball over the right field wall bringing home three big runs for the home team. In the third inning Watson would continue his big game scoring off of a Carginan sacrifice fly to right field.
- The run would continue into the fourth inning with first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) earning an RBI off of a single up the left side followed by a sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) single allowing Roeger to score bringing the lead to 11-2. The inning would end with one more score for the home team bringing the lead to 12-2.
- The Raiders would find their final scores in the fifth inning off of a Reis double and Tejada score and Reis score off of an O'Connell single bringing the score to 12-4.
- The mercy rule would come into effect after the Chargers dominated the bottom of the fifth seeing a Roeger double allowing Dennis to score and a big single down the left field line from first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) returning Roeger to home plate. Watson would finish his day earning two more ribbies on a solid single up the middle and aggressive base running from the Chargers leading to the 16-4 final in seven.
On the Mound:
- Watson would register the win in six innings pitched allowing four runs, striking out four and walking four. Junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) would come in to close for the Chargers pitching one inning allowing no hits and striking out two facing four batters.
At the Plate:
- Watson went 5-for-5 from the plate with three runs, four ribbies off of a double and a stolen base. Roeger also had a 100% performance going 4-for-4 with two runs and two ribbies with two doubles and a stolen base.
Post-Game Press:
"It was good to get a win to get us back on track before playoffs." Said Sophomore
