Chargers Pickup Statement Win Over Mitchell on Thursday

NEW LONDON, N.H. – The Colby-Sawyer baseball team continued to thrive on Thursday defeating the number one team in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Mitchell by a 11-4 final. With the win it secures the Chargers first 20-win season since the year of 2000 and clinches a playoff berth for the first time in the GNAC.

  • The Mariners took a quick 2-0 lead as Cole Lalli hit a home run in the first inning off of senior Zach Rogers (Mashpee, Mass.). The Chargers responded with a triple by sophomore Cam Carignan (Rutland, Mass.) followed by a RBI single by graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.) to cut the deficit in half. In the top half of the second Mitchell got the run back on a two-out bloop single to lead 3-1. 
  • In the bottom of the second the Chargers finally took the game over plating five runs. It started with a RBI single by sophomore Dylan Watson (Byfield, Mass.) to plate sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.). Carignan continued the stretch with a RBI single of his own leading to a massive three-run bomb by O'Brien to put Colby-Sawyer on top by a 6-3 score. In the bottom of the fifth the Chargers added an insurance run as first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to score first year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) who reached on a double. The Mariners added a run in the sixth inning on a double to keep the game close at 7-4 as we headed to the final three innings. 
  • Colby-Sawyer blew the game open in the bottom of the seventh as senior Jack Matarese (Ashland, Mass.) singled to score two runners with two outs, followed by another two RBI single by Carignan to extend the Charger lead to 11-4. Rogers and junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) closed the door over the final six outs for the Chargers win. 
On the Mound:
  • Rogers went 7.2 innings to pick up his third win of the season allowing four runs on eight hits with four punch outs. Mullen got the final four outs without allowing a hit and dropping his ERA to 0.72. 
At the Plate:
  • O'Brien was a star going 3-for-5 with the home run, four RBI and a run scored. Carignan added another huge day going 3-for-5 with three ribbys, two runs scored and a triple. Dennis added a 2-for-4 day with two runs scored and two stolen bags.
Post Game Press:
"It feels unbelievable to get this win", said graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.). "I feel so hopefully for this group as we head into the playoffs. This has been such a turn around and we are ready to keep this going."

The Chargers will host the University of Saint Joseph (Conn.) tomorrow at Kelsey Baseball Field at 2:30 PM.
