Lyndonville, Vt. — Colby-Sawyer College's Baseball faced off with nonconference opponent Vermont State Lyndon on Monday securing two wins, 9-4 & 13-10 respectfully.
Rapid Recap Game One (Win 9-4):
- The Chargers got on the board first in the third inning on Monday with sophomore Mike McLeer (Saco, Maine) flying out to right field for first year Noah Staffier (Beverly, Mass.) to tag up and score, which would be followed up by a score from sophomore Jared Schmitt (Surry, N.H.) on a wild pitch. The Chargers would round out the inning scoring one more run to take an early 3-0 lead. In the bottom of the third the Hornets would look to counter scoring a run of their own on an error made by the Chargers.
- The fourth inning would continue the Chargers run scoring four more runs on hot bats from Staffier, Schmitt and graduate student Cooper O'Brien (Vergennes, Vt.). The Hornets would make their final run in the bottom of this inning responding off of a wild pitch and error from the Chargers bringing the score to 8-4.
- The final score of the game would come in the top of the 7th inning with sophomore Devin Montalvo (Coram, N.Y.) hammering a double into left field allowing first year Sean Roeger (Salem, N.H.) to round home giving the Chargers their 9-4 lead and final score.
On the Mound:
- First year Evan Dennis (East Ryegate, Vt.) earned the win for the Chargers bringing his record to 1-1, pitching four innings allowing four runs, striking out two and walking three. First year Hayden Goerlich (Amherst, N.H.) pitched three innings for the Chargers allowing two hits, two strikeouts and tabbing the save.
At the Plate:
- Montalvo led the offense for the Chargers going 2-for-4 from the plate with a double and an RBI. Staffier went 2-for-4 producing two runs and a stolen base.
Rapid Recap Game Two (Win 13-10):
- The Chargers would capitalize first in game two of the day with Staffier reaching first on an error allowing sophomore Cam Carginan (Rutland, Mass.) to make it home to give the Chargers a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Schmitt would continue his hot streak of hitting, hammering a solo homerun over the left field fence to extend the lead to 2-0 in the second.
- The home team Hornets would see their biggest scoring innings in the second and third, scoring five runs in the second inning off of wild pitches and walks. In the third the Hornets would find their bats and continue to capitalize off of walks to bring their lead to 10-2 at the end of the third inning.
- A challenge which was met from the Chargers whose bats came alive in the top of the fourth. First year Jesse Chaves (Taunton, Mass.) ripped a double into left field allowing Montalvo to reach home which would be followed by a stolen base from the first year and Schmitt to bring the score to 10-4. Carginan would step in and single to allow Schmitt to score, followed by an O'Brien single and RBI. Roeger sacrificed a high fly ball to right field to bring home O'Briend before Carginan would make his way around the horn bringing the score to within one run.
- The seventh inning would be the deciding factor in the second game with Carignan continuing his hot streak doubling to right field earning two ribbies with Schmitt and Montalvo coming home. A walk bated by sophomore Nick Johnson (Manchester, N.J.) and error from the Hornets would allow the Chargers to take the 13-10 lead and final score.
On the Mound:
- The Chargers used a slew of pitchers in the second matchup of the day with junior Jack Mullen (Norfolk, Mass.) earning the win with an inning pitched and talling one strikeout with no hits allowed. First year Brady Young (Stratham, N.H.) had the start for the Chargers pitching 1.1 innings allowing five runs, striking out two and walking three.
At the Plate:
- Carignan went 4-for-4 from the plate in the second matchup with three ribbies, and four hits including a double and three stolen bases. Schmitt would go 2-for-4 with a big homerun and two stolen bases.
Post-Game Press:
"It was great to get another two wins today!" said Carignan, "We are trying to build as much momentum as we can to finish this season strong and continue it into the post season!"

The Chargers will host the University of Saint Joseph on Wednesday for a single 9-inning conference game with a 2:30PM start.
