BOSTON, Mass. – The Colby-Sawyer women's lacrosse team fell short of a win this Saturday in their GNAC (Great Northeast Athletic Conference) matchup against Emmanuel College. Emmanuel's eight goals in the fourth quarter propelled them to secure the win 20-14 against Colby-Sawyer.
Rapid Recap:
- Colby-Sawyer started out the first period of play red hot as graduate student Hannah Marquis (Weare, N.H.) found the back of the net in the first 60 seconds. First year Rose Finlayson (Hopkinton, N.H.) beat the zone defense to net another goal for the Chargers extending their lead further early on. Junior captain Heather Hanson (Barnstable, Mass.) tallied a hat trick in the first quarter. This proved to not be sufficient enough as Emmanuel scored three consecutive goals to tie the game 5-5 headed into the second period of play.
- The Chargers offense found their groove again with junior captain Soph Kuhlthau (Cheshire, Conn.) weaving traffic with another goal to retain the lead. This was followed up by a man-up goal from sophomore midfielder Cecilia Ponzini (Windham, N.H.). The Saints rallied ahead with another four goals to earn their first lead of the game heading into the second half up 9-8.
- Colby-Sawyer started the comeback behind the efforts of Finlayson and Ponzini, who combined for three goals to give the Chargers the lead again. Emmanuel managed to tie the game yet again notching another lead change for the evening. The Chargers started to navigate the Saints defense as Hanson notched another point for the day giving Colby-Sawyer a 12-11 lead headed into the last quarter of play.
- Emmanuel College came out of the gate firing on all cylinders by putting away six consecutive goals to extend the Saints lead 17-12. Senior forward Olivia Romo (Marlboro, Vt.) ignited a small comeback with back-to-back goals. The Saints added another three goals to end the game 20-14.
Inside The Numbers:
- Hanson had an excellent performance notching five goals on the day, two grounders, two caused turnovers, and five draw controls.Finlayson scratched another hat-trick on the season, while Ponzini marked five points on the day along with five grounders. Junior defenseman Hannah Himes (Williston, Vt.) put up four caused turnovers, along with Marquis putting up another three caused turnover game.
- Junior goalkeeper AJ Paton (Exeter, N.H.) tallied seven saves in the loss today bringing her record to 10-4 on the season.
